You're right that for the most part the Chiefs blunted the run game. But you still have to mix it in and keep their defense in check to prevent them from cutting loose and attacking the qb. Sticking with the run when there wasn't much production was the right approach to take in the game within the game.

I also agree with this. You hear it all the time - and it sounds cliche' - that it's so important to stick with that run game even when it isn't working. So, cliche' perhaps, but also very true. Doing so helps keep the defense honest.

Oh and by the way, Allen wasn't sacked.

I love their RBs this season. That said, it's an unusual day to be celebrating them -- insofar as the RBs go, the Chiefs totally stifled the Bills' run game last night.

They were generally stymied all day, getting 49 yards collectively between the 3 of them.

But Cook got 2 touches in goal-to-go situations and took it to the house both times.

When I saw that yesterday, I felt sad for the guy. Felt like someone dealing with depression finally seeing a spark of joy.

Respectfully, I think you need exposure to more of Cooper's interviews over the years.

He is a very lowkey, serious guy. He generally presents with a flat affect. He is also very intelligent -- even cerebral. I don't think any of that suggests that he's a loner or depressed. I'd go more with reserved, quiet, and introverted, but also a fiercely intense competitor.

Add to that: He can track a long ball's flight in the air like nobody the Bills have had in recent memory.

This deserves recognition. They couldn't do more than get 2 yards a pop all over the field and then -- incredibly -- they got 2 running scores from inside the opponent's 5. Both beauties too.

You might be right. Could be 100% projection on my part, as someone who has dealt with depression thoughout adulthood.

Yes, running was tough sledding, except for Allen  ...  the Chiefs did play with 7, 8, and sometimes even 9 up front to stop the run and to show blitz.  The Chiefs have a very stingy run defense, averaging only 3.6 YPC for the season.  The Chiefs left room for the passing game and focused on the run.

They dared the Bills to go throw the deeper lower percentage passes - Josh did hit a few longer ones to Cooper (playing with a cast on his left wrist) but then he came out in the second half.

The Bills had over 100 yard rushing, Allen had half of the yards.

Interestingly, on the critical 4th and 2 TD play, the Chiefs dropped into a zone and moved guys back.   Allen had the option to run and took it.  I counted 5 guys that missed him.   Allen is strong, fast enough, and elusive.  What an athlete.

Some random thoughts after the game:

  • Shakir is a stud and is absolutely Josh's security blanket
  • Aaron Kromer does not get enough credit for the job he's done with the OL
  • My goodness, if this team can be healthy going into the playoffs I like their chances. Getting Milano back will be huge, if even on a pitch count for his first few games. (Replacing Williams on obvious passing downs probably).
  • Wouldn't be surprised at all to hear in the coming few days that Micah Hyde has been signed for the remainder of the season.
  • Josh's body may well be very near its physical peak but his brain for the game will continue to develop for another five years. It will be a sight to behold as a fan.
  • My initial reaction when Bernard made the interception was that it's 4th down. He should have just knocked the ball down. But given the circumstances it made no difference. I'm sure the pick was much more impactful (and joyous) for those in the stadium. And it will leave an impression on the OC's the Bills will face going forward this year. Just one more thing for them to worry about.

Really excited about the win. Go Bills!!

I think this is the best backfield they have had in a long time. All 3 guys are talented and productive in their own way.

I meant overall this season. Was shocked that the Chiefs hadn’t given up 60 yards running in any game this year. Hats off to them for their great run D. The running game was able to punch 3 TDs in even if they weren’t getting much on the ground yesterday.

Although it's extraordinarily unlikely, the Steelers now control their own destiny to the #1 seed. If Buffalo and Pittsburgh both win out, they mutually eliminate the Chiefs via head-to-head tiebreaker and Pittsburgh would own the tiebreaker over Buffalo via conference record.

I don’t mean it as a bad thing. He’s just different. It feels like one of those movies where the outcast suddenly finds love. Hopefully that catch was the moment where that outcast first gets noticed.

So many guys had a chance at him. 17 is just a special player.

That said, when I watch the replays it seems like the Chiefs were in man-coverage. Or at least mostly a man-coverage scheme.

Actually, it's hard for me to judge -- since the formation was so bunched up, so close to the line to gain.

...except for in the red zone.  Cook with 2 rushing TDs last night.

Two words:

Mack Hollins.

He hasn't made a ton of catches, but with the receiving corps dinged up he's made a few crucial ones.  He was a nice find.

and a couple of crucial short yardage first down conversions.

Mostly, the futility seemed to come from the 6+ 1st down runs that went for -1 to 2 yards.

I have no faith that their QB play will get them enough wins for the #1 seed.  It’s not good or consistent.

I was pretty frustrated with that on the last drive.  Luckily they didn't go to low risk plays on 2nd, 3rd (and yeah, 4th) downs.

Perhaps, but I'd like to see them beat the Chiefs at least.

Both of their QB's made boneheaded decisions in crunch time yesterday. Wilson threw a pass into the end zone that looked like a throwaway when released. Except it wasn't. Wilson floated the ball into the end zone and it was easily picked. Then later, Fields was in for a designed QB run play to convert a critical third down. Went around left end and slid a half yard short of the marker. I believe he thought his 'yards while sliding' counted.

Steelers looked really good yesterday. Very physical. TJ Watt is probably the best defensive player in the NFL. But they still have remaining 2 games against the Bengals, and one each against the Ravens, Eagles and KC. To your point Inky, Wilson will need to play the mistake-free game manager role to run the table and I don't believe he's capable of doing so.

I watched the game yesterday and saw the plays you are referring to.  Those guys are not good QBs.  I’ll be shocked if they win more games than they lose the rest of the season.

Look at the rest of their schedule. It’s brutal. Even the 4 games against Ohio should be rough given the way that division has always played.

Yes, the showed man pre-snap,  but Allen said they dropped into zone.  The was room for Allen to pick up speed and go once he passed the LOS.

Interesting. When you watch the replay, it sure seems like each Chief defender is glued to a Bills receiving option. So much so that there's one Chiefs defender - #23 - who loses a chance to tackle Allen because he's following Cooper to the sideline (where another Chiefs defender is following Shakir).

Of course, there are coverage schemes that are a combination of man and zone.

Just a fascinating play to watch over and over -- focusing on one element each time. The last time I re-watched, I was impressed by how athletic the Chiefs left DE was -- Bills RT (Van Dermark (sp?)) pushes the DE way wide -- and I'd thought he was out of the play as Allen steps up -- but the dude adjusts in an instant and nearly makes a play.
