That Aud Smell Posted November 1 Author Report Posted November 1 Anyway, it seems there were still two outcomes possible: Ball rolls out of bounds after the play's been called dead (tuddy) and Texans get ball at 20, or ball comes to rest in end zone after the play's been called dead (tuddy) and Jets get ball at ~1. Nobody was ever getting an opportunity to fall on that ball (whistle blown) and the refs would not have been able to pick up the ball in error as it lay in the end zone (rather, they signaled a TD in error). That Aud Smell Posted November 1 Author Report Posted November 1 Further clarity? I think @K-9 was saying to me: Nothing would have happened on the field because the signal for TD was made - play's over. My question was more directed to what the replay booth would have done. Quote

I thought K-9 missed the thrust of my question - hence my "huh?" The other answers upthread confirmed that something would have happened if, instead of rolling out of the end zone, the ball had laid still in the end zone and then been picked up (in error) by the refs. That is: Rather than the Texans getting the ball on the 20, the Jets would have had it on the ~1. Am I missing something? Nope. I'm asking: What if, instead of rolling out of the end zone, that ball had come to rest in the end zone, and was then picked up (in error (?)) by the refs. I'm given to understand that the ruling would have been different than what actually happened last night. Why would the refs pick up a live ball they ruled was a fumble? Perhaps we should ask Gene Saratore? 🙂 Quote

As to why the refs would pick up a live ball they'd ruled a fumble? If no player from either team goes to pick it up, they will blow the play dead. (I.e., if both teams treat it like a dead ball, the refs will deem it to be a dead ball.) And, at that point, the ball goes back to the Jest at the point they last had possession of it. Quote

How long before they blow the play dead? Is there a rule for that? This might be the mother of unlikely scenarios. But I'm glad @That Aud Smellfinally has closure. 1 Quote

Also, if the refs on the field had managed to rule it a fumble in real time, there would be no TD signal, no whistles. Then the refs would be standing around, conspicuously, as the ball skittered to a stop in the end zone. I think players on the field would pick up on that and pounce. If they didn't, the refs would give it a few beats and then blow the play dead -- returning the ball to the team that fumbled it. Quote

Looks like my take is a lot more credible now. 😀 Rodgers probably won't beat the Bills on December 29, but I won't be shocked if they are on a 7 game winning streak when they get to Orchard Park. Dangerous team if we are fighting for the #1 seed and they are fighting for their playoff life. I have NO love for A-a-ron ... but if the Texans had played like THAT when the Bills played them ... I will just refer you to the Seattle game for the likely outcome. Texans looked like a 2-15 team in that game. Quote

It is not shocking it took him half a season to round into form. Jets have a real shot to put together 6 or 7 wins in a row. I won't be shocked if they get a wild card spot. 1 Quote

Pshh, he made it back in 6 weeks, with cayenne pepper, the tears of kittens and a mix of sodium bicarb and *****. Instant youth right there. He's an NFL shaman, aren't you aware!?!? Dude, he's cooked, that team is cooked. And I'm here to see it all 1 1 Quote

That Jets team was lost until Will Anderson got injured. Once he was gone, the Jets offense had a chance. Throw in no Nico Collins and no Diggs (and granted, he's a me-first prima donna, but he's still a good possession receiver at this point) and that the Vikings and Packers laid out the blueprint on how to defend a young QB in Stroud and... great, the Jets got one on a home game on a short week against a struggling and very-injured team. They're still garbage with poor washed-up QB play. Hope the Bills win today: avenge Beebe, Kenneth Davis, Paup, and Lofton! Edited November 3 by DarthEbriate 1 Quote
