I guess I’d look at he roster like this: Players I would keep because I don’t think the value is there due to the players being undervalued by the league and the return wouldn’t offset the loss: - JJP - Mitts - Quinn - R Johnson - Benson Players I would keep because I don’t think the value is there due to star player status making deals nigh impossible to predict or balance and would rather keep than risk: - Thompson - Dahlin Players I would keep because I admit I probably overvalue: - Levi - Cozens Players I would be willing to trade and who expect would be valued appropriately: - Tuch - Joki Players I suspect the league overvalues: - Power (former 1OA) - E Johnson (“veteran” presence) - Clifton (it worked for Risto!) Players never going anywhere for anything inbound so take a bag of pucks if you can: - VO - Jost - Krebs - Comrie - UPL No idea how the league values them: - Skinner - Greenway No, no no they shouldn't be available for a myriad of reasons Quote

The coaching move needs to be made, but they also can't go with another guy with no or limited NHL experience. It has to be a proven NHL coach. One that has had teams playing defense before. Gallant would be my first choice at the moment from among the unemployed. I'd certainly be up for Brindamour next year if that's even a real consideration which I doubt. 1 Quote

IF Brind'Amour would come to Buffalo, they need to keep Granato for however long it takes for Camelface to feel he's not hosing a fellow brother. Gallant has been high on the list for years. Can't see him ever getting brought in, but he'd be great to get them back fully into relevance. But, at this point, would be pleased with just punting Ellis off the bench and bringing in Woods. Would like more than that to happen, but at least that's a start in the right direction. 2 Quote

Huckleberry Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 Power - Dahlin - Levi - Mittelstadt - Cozens - Quinn - JJP - Benson - Tuch - Thompson (maybe) - Skinner (maybe). The rest I won't mind as much 😛 Quote
OverPowerYou Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) The untouchables - Dahlin, Tuch, Power, Thompson, Cozens, Quinn, Paterka..maybe Levi. everyone else is on thin ice. No pun intended Edited December 21, 2023 by OverPowerYou Quote

But as far as “caring” if the player is traded, the above list is pretty much how I feel. it’s also possible I’m overvaluing Tuch’s trade value because the above is predicated on it being a proper haul. If it’s not, he moves to the first group bordering on second, and I would very much care if he were traded. As for Power, I don’t like him. I didn’t when they drafted him (I wanted to trade the pick). I hope I’m wrong about him but I just don’t see him being a value 1OA. I don’t even really know why I don’t like him. That’s the worst part. But given his draft pedigree, I think the rest of the league values him higher than I do. Hence his placement. Quote
Billznut Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 All I know is, IF Kevyn Adams could ever be shown the door, and the Sabres brought in a real, experienced NHL GM, I’m betting one of the very first things he would do is find an actual good veteran competent goaltender. And if he had to part with some prospects or a roster player or two to accomplish this, it would be done immediately. 2 Quote
sabrefanday1 Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 At this point we are clearly in some cases under-evaluating some players...Power (and a host of other players) would be amazing on another team trust me. Boston would take a pile of our players right away and they'd be excellent all of a sudden. I so think we should explore trades for tougness (which should not cost any of our "core" guys) 1 Quote

And it stinks because had Adams and Granato been willing to make those kind of changes this off-season when they should've been made, we very likely wouldn't be here watching them get to a point where the much more significant change needs to happen. 1 Quote

But like @pi2000 says, the move to make 1st comes from the coaching ranks. In no particular order: Dahlin Levi Thompson Mitts JJP Benson Ryan Johnson There are a couple of tweeners in there that I would listen to offers for, but be hesitant. But these are my absolute "no's". When it comes to coaching or trades, I think the Sabres need to stand pat for the season. I had expectations of this being a 100 point team this year. I was only asking for about 5 more wins this year compared to last. Now we are seeing it isn't close. I have said the last few months that the first thing this org needs to do before moving any piece is ask the GM "what do we need to be successful" and if his shoot from the hip answer is anything similar to "time to develop" or "stay the course" then you pull the rip cord immediately and escort the guy out of the building right then and there. Conversation over. No convincing. No "Do this or else". That is somebody who has no idea what they are seeing on the ice, which means they have no accurate solution. Any move by somebody who says that about this roster is only making performative moves to keep their job, not somebody who is making moves with a plan. I have a hard time hearing Adam's "this is an execution problem" as anything other than "stay the course". Any major move anywhere in the org needs to be executed by a new GM. 1 Quote

Stoner Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) I think some (most?) are missing the subtlety of the question. Didn't you ever ponder whether you'd be upset if you never saw a specific friend or family member again? There are family members I would not be upset to never see again. What Sabres do you love? I would stop short of love but I admire Gus a lot and would care if he were traded without ever seeing success here. Kyle is close to that but hasn't been here long enough. I want only good things for Gus and KO, and that includes them having a shot at the playoffs. Mike Ramsey was my all time favorite Sabre. I was very happy to see him get a chance at a Cup with Pitt, and then Detroit before he retired. He earned it. I feel exactly the same with regards to Gus and KO, so I guess in that regard I would care. Otherwise, whatever……. 1 Quote

(Unless it was a joke) I have to think hard about the last time I was truly upset about a Sabre being traded away. I think it was Marcus Foligno. Before that the Peca situation/trade was devastating. Way way back Danny Gare. There aren't actually that many times and certainly not many in the recent era where players have disappointed more than become loved. 1 Quote

He is a solid 4th liner in this league. On a more personal note... He came out of the USHL as a scorer and was the top Centre on a horrible tank team. After he and Larsson got waylaid by Bylsma for trying to lead in training camp instead of one of the big names and getting unceremoniously shunted aside by the coach, they both reinvented themselves as grinders. Under Housley, they with Okposo became a very good 4th line and regularly tilted the ice in the Sabres favour in spite of historically difficult usage. Instead of quitting the league, he took pride in doing something else to help the team. He plays the game with the attitude that you want a player to have. I myself was an intellectual ultra-talent who turned down the Ivy League for Case Western Reserve (better monetary deal). The guys that invented chaos theory, a former head of the EU's version of the CDC in Strasbourg, the top mathematical theorists in neural networks, and 5 Nobel Prize winners considered me to be an intellectual equal. But I take an anti-depressant, among other things, to stop me from crashing and burning by checking my mental illnesses -- most of which made me that smart. So I have had to reinvent myself as a grinder and have been grinding for over 30 years after starting 25 years largely getting by on raw talent and only needing grit on occasion. That is very humbling to do when you are used to being the cream that always rises to the top and then accepting that as your fate. Hence, even though I am advocating moving him for the good of the team, I will still root for him. Same with Okposo. 3 3 1 Quote

FrenchConnection44 Posted December 22, 2023 Report Posted December 22, 2023 I would care if we lost in the trade. I don’t want to trade anyone if they are better elsewhere and we are worse or the player we get back is worse. If we won the trade and the player(s) we received are more productive and we win, then I don’t care. Quote
