Brawndo Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 From The Athletic On Sanderson’s whopping eight-year deal with the Senators and how it affects Power’s, who has a year left on his entry-level deal with the Sabres. When you’re a year out with an entry-level player — Jake had another year left under contract — you rarely do a bridge. You do a bridge at the end of a contract. Usually you explore a seven- or eight-year deal if you’re a year out. … First of all, Jake was happy there, sees the future. He likes where the organization’s going, and therefore we went right to eight years, so there’s no question, especially a year out. … We’ve had a few conversations (with Buffalo on Power) and now camp is a week away from now, so we’re going to continue to talk. Of course, Owen and Jake are within similar comps. You always bring a pool of about seven to 10 players, so we’ll see how it goes. 1 Quote
nfreeman Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Interesting. So the implication is that the Sabres have had discussions on a 7- or 8-year extension with OP. Since Sanderson got a bit over $8MM per year, it seems pretty likely that OP would expect at least $8MM per year as well. 1 Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Just get it done at this point. Is it stupid money for a guy with one year of NHL experience? Yes, but a bridge will still cost 6+ and with the cap rising and so much depth in the forward pipeline, they can afford the added cost both short and long-term. 3 Quote
JoeSchmoe Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 I think you gotta get it done, but his defense this year gives me pause for thought. 1 1 Quote

PerreaultForever Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 "we've had a few conversations" doesn't sound like the Sabres are really working hard on it at this point to me. Not yet anyway. Quote

All young defensemen struggle early on, but 8x8 suggests he's already shown a lot of promise offensively and defensively, and he just hasn't. Quote
kas23 Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 We give OP a bridge deal and RD a 5 year deal and SS explodes… Quote

He isn't elite yet and paying him as such is nuts. Earn that level first. Quote
