That does seem to make sense, but I don’t feel KA is going to do anything….. Oh, how I wish it were true….

LOL…. One of these days….

And isn’t it kind of crowded in Rochester’s defensive depth situation now?

I don’t get this move…

Sabres NHL defencemen under contract:

  1. Dahlin
  2. Power
  3. Samuelsson
  4. Jokiharju
  5. Clifton
  6. Lyubushkin
  7. Johnson
  8. Stillman
  9. Bryson
  10. Clague

And in the AHL

  1. Davies
  2. Johnson
  3. Novikov
  4. Cecconi
  5. Prow
  6. Metsa
  7. Jandric
  8. Savoie

There may also be a handful of other AHL contract players but I’m not aware if guys like Tischke, Bartkowski, Eliot and Strand are returning.

It’s crazy crowded.

Interesting to note that the Amerks will have 4 rookie pros in their D group (Savoie, Jandric, Metsa, Johnson), plus NA rookie (Novikov), plus Cecconi and Davies who still qualify as "developmental" (less than 260 pro games) players under AHL rules. Only Prow is considered a vet.  That said the 4 rookies have 18 years of college or Jr experience and Novikov has 2 years of experience in the KHL.  It's kind of an intriguing group.

Isn't it a good thing that a team with defensive issues has more defensive players under contract ?

I understand there is the question of quality within these numbers, but, the economic structure of the defense in Buffalo will be 2 guys making $10Mish per year (Power and Dahlin), so, the rest of the D corps, given averages for compensation, need to come in around $2-3Mish each.  That requires GMKA to be more selective on the vets he pays, but, also requires him to have a strong prospect pool.

As far as mature prospects go, he's just getting there with players developed internally but they may or may not be ready, which is why you sign a few Clagues to allow the prospects time to mature.

Looking like that ECHL team is going to be stacked on D.  Because barring other moves there's already 10 guys pencilled in down in Ra-cha-cha (am putting Bryson and Clague in with the Amerks group).  So, am expecting at least 2 of those guys to be dominating the ECHL.  Plus if they bring any of those other AHL vets back, that's just that many more that need to slide down to play "AA ball."
