I loved Hannigan. He had great stories. For his day job, he worked for a beer distributor. Saw him more than once at Sammy McCarthy's saloon down in the Old First Ward.

Gene McCarthy’s?

No, Sam McCarthy's was on the corner of O'Connell and Kentucky Street. Sam was Gene's older brother.

I met him and got his autograph when he was playing for the Bisons.

Very good, mostly AHL player during the 6 and 12 team era.

Nice man and he was very good in the broadcast booth.

His refusal to ride off into the sunset with WGRZ, like Irv, Tom and Rick did at WKBW-TV Eyewitness News, was the final and most gross misjudgement for me and it didn't sit well that he went to join the Pegulas, who usurped this guy from his long-standing perch.

Well, eventually he did ride--or drive--into the sunset.  He was my Uber driver a few years ago.  Retired, just doing it to keep busy, etc.  Really nice guy, too.
