I don’t think it will be a franchise defining moment either way this goes

Oh, you're right, of course.  But better to just get another D in the fold.

those prospects are much higher in rankings than johnson. Johnson Ceiling is like 5th or 6th dman after a couple years in AHL.

If Johnson is that crappy of a prospect then whatever KA wants to do is fine.  I would imagine they know more about his worth then us.

What do you base your assessment on?

Johnson will be playing NHL games either in 23-24 or 24-25. He may not be good, but he’ll likely be playing. Why would we give this up for the 63rd pick in 2024 has close to a 0% of playing in a Sabres game in 24-25. Why would you think any otherwise?

Why are people saying he is not good?

Some people are conditioned that if they tune into a game and a dman isn’t going end to end with 59 points then he is not good.

What the Sabres desperately need is a couple dmen that are solid in their own zone. That is what Johnson is.

Not flashy but does his job well.

He's not physical, on the smaller side and doesn't produce offensively.   He skates well and is a good first pass guy, but that's about it.

He doesn’t make mistakes in his own end and has exceptional positioning.

Again he is good at what he does.

BUT....is he good in his own zone (or not)?   That's what I care about right now.

What’s the holdup?  Sign him or don’t.  Knies signed and is playing. Faber signed and is playing.  Why is this so hard?

If he doesn't want to play on this team, **** him.

He's doing us a favor by not signing at this point. Burns a year when he may or may not even get into a game given the practice situation and schedule.

It dragging out like this leads me to believe he doesn't want to sign here. Hope I'm wrong as I think he will be a solid, if unspectacular NHL D-man, but if he wants to play elsewhere, so be it. It wouldn't be a devastating blow or anything.

teams need 9 - 10 dmen in a season, I think he’s an important enough piece

plus let’s be clear he is  Smaller like Joker not like Bryson

good defensively and gets the pucks up to the forwards.  You can always use a guy like that.

I'm hoping for a better version of Jokiharju

Jokiharju, who IMO gets pushed off the puck too easily, is 30lbs heavier than Johnson.

He'll need to bulk up and get stronger before he sees a single shift in the NHL.

Yes. Though it's not all about the girth. There's a degree of want to that needs to be there in order to win those battles.

How many times have you seen him play?

Johnson's ep page has said 170lb for 3 years. No one has updated his weight but it seems unlikely he's at what he was as a freshman.

Johnson is a smallish defensive dman. He is not flashy, does not score. He is defensively responsible. Is he the Sabres savior? No, but he will be a solid 4-6 guy that can be where he is supposed to be. Is it a huge loss if he does not sign? No. Is he what the Sabres need? Yes, and no. We need more defensively good players, but we also need some size to clear the front of the net and win board battles. Not sure he fits with that part, but still think he can help the team.
