I left my home towards the end of the 2nd last night in order to meet an old friend at the Harborcenter Marriott's bar. (My friend was in from out of town, was at the game, and was staying at the Marriott.)

I got to the hotel's bar area with about 10:00 minutes to go in the third.

I squinted at the televisions. There was hockey on, but ... not the Sabres game? One of the wait staff saw my confusion and explained: "Yeah. We don't get the ESPN+ Sabre games."

I was at a hotel owned and controlled by PSE. The Sabres broadcast was unavailable at the hotel bar. Astounding.

It's out of their hands I believe.  There are absolutely zero streaming services that are licensed for use within a business, let alone a the restaurant bar scenario (different license than normal business).

This is on the NHL for allowing ESPN+ to be the sole avenue of broadcast.  The businesses would be criminally liable if they were to use a residential streaming service in a business.  It's a long shot of getting caught, but it could happen.

I'm calling BS.  I've watched ESPN+ only Sabres games on sports bar TVs.

In greater Buffalo?

edit: Not that I know that could make a difference. The experience was baffling to me.

I mean - you definitely can get an ESPN+ subscription for your bar or restaurant.

Which makes its absence at the Harborcenter Marriott that much more mystifying.

I know PSE owns the building and financed the development. But do they operate the hotel itself? I doubt it.

This article indicates it is operated by the Shaner Hotel Group.

I agree that it seems a little tone deaf, but I don’t know if PSE should be dying by the blade here.

Okay.

Sorry, I was out of date on my information or perhaps what I have was referring only to linear television.  It was not my intention to deceive anyone.

However, to make everyone feel better. I am going to find out the information because I actually need someone on my team (at work)  to be aware if there is a streaming option that does not require a satellite dish.

While not a primary focus of my product team we are focused on delivering business solutions that business internet service providers would deliver.  This is why I was making the statement.

This information is on the Joe Hand site.. leading me to believe it ain't the most straightforward "streaming" option.

OK, now that I can answer this, I was told it is extremely difficult to edit tv choices at a corporate hotel. The franchise agreements usually call for major paperwork and approval.

Curious.. what do they show on the TVs inside the arena during an ESPN+ broadcast?

Also... Thanks for opening a new thread.  This conversation could end up very beneficial for me if there is a way we can partner to bring it into our service lineup where I work.

They had something hockey-related on - maybe the NHL Network? With the commentary and live-looks.

That was what ESPN+ was doing during the intermissions.  @zamboni said it was the ESPN+ feed at the Eulers game.

If that isn't the quintessential Pegula ownership experience I don't know what is

Being blamed for the actions of others.. that does sound about right.

So.. someone leasing space in a property the Pegula's own is not showing Sabres games and that's what we're upset about now?

Good call. When you didn't read or know anything about the situation. Never admit and just keep digging.

I dont know a thing about it other than it's a bad look. Frankly I don't care. If it has nothing to do with PSE why not admonish the OP?

It was my OP. I wouldn’t use the word upset, but I was definitely aggravated. And really more mystified.

Posters here - including you - are right to distinguish between PSE and the lessee/operator of that Marriott.

From this consumer’s standpoint, though, those are PSE properties. It’s  all part of Harborcenter. Pegula Land. It’s the hotel that all visiting teams use - except probably Ottawa (ha). And the bar there wasn’t showing the Sabre game being played a hundred yards to the south. It struck me as bizarre.

It’s been related to me offline that Marriott corporate policies on cable subscriptions are rigid. Simple enough explanation.

It’s still a bad look.

With all due respect, I still don’t see how this is a bad look. Unless that bar has changed dramatically since I was there, it makes no attempt to pretend it’s a sports bar.

I can’t imagine anyone visits that establishment based on what’s on their monitors and thus it doesn’t enter into management’s planning at all.

There is a sports bar ten floors down, somebody playing hockey in the building, an NHL game next door, a casino with sports betting within walking distance and ESPN plus available on a phone or laptop. That bar’s regular clientele has made a decision on how important televised sporting events are to them and that bar has determined how important what’s on their TV’s are to their clientele.

It had its TV's - 2 or 3? - all tuned to a hockey game. Not the Sabres game. They must hear about it enough because, when I squinted (literally) to see what was on the TV's, one of the waitresses said to me, in a sort of world weary way, "yeah, we don't get a lot of the Sabre games." When I looked at her like "really?!" She just shrugged with a "hey, I just work here" look.

That hotel draws a significant portion of business from people who are in town to see the Sabres. So I tend to disagree.

I visited and was looking for the hockey game. And, like I said, it was apparent to me that they get the question, at least from time to time.

The bar was empty when I arrived around 10:00 pm. 🥱 After the game ended, the bar area soon filled with people coming from the game. I guess they don't count as people who would want the Sabres broadcast on? (Otoh, they were ... at the game.)

I suppose this gets to the heart of it. (Although I am unclear on a hotel bar having regular clientele.)

The establishment was one I hope never to return to. My draft beer tasted like it had a cigar put out in it. When I politely asked for a replacement, that pour/glass had the same issue. I declined that one as well and asked for a bottle of Molson.

I was there to visit with people who had been at the game for work, were staying at the hotel, and had early flights out. Their MO is to go to the hotel's bar after the game for something to eat and a couple drinks.

It was not my choice, regrettably.
