Cozens had adrenaline going on game day. I will bet the jaw area hurt like hell the day after, and maybe today too.  No sense in aggravating it.  Aspy will have to step in.  

I expect 71-17-37 to see a lot of ice.

Lineup looks a fair bit different with even a singular significant F injury, which we’ve been abnormally lucky to avoid. A strong argument for why Adams is still “open to improvement”. If the price is right, we could always use more good players.

Someone else may have mentioned it but it would be interesting to see Krebs in-between Quinn and JJ. And then put Asplund on the Okposo and Girgs line. It seemed that the Quinn-Krebs-JJ line clicked in Rochester. Just a thought.

The Minnesota game is what got the 7s all going. Olofsson had been ice cold going into it (0 pts in 6 gms), Mitts and Jost had combined for 2 pts in the previous 3 games.

And then... Minnesota. Jost with a prove-it game against the team that waived him. Mitts with a show-the-folks-back-home game. VO with some overdue goal bills to pay. Combined for 2G and 4A.

Including MIN, they're a combined 11-13-24 and +0 in the last 12 games. It's not fantastic, but it's a solid -- not a liability -- third line. They've canceled out the opposition, gotten their points, and scored 3 GWG in the process (yes, one of the GWG was PPG for VO last game, but he got going with the 7s, not because of the PP). And they've had one or two shifts a game where they've controlled the offensive zone had dangerous in-the-slot scoring chances or had time to start the next line change with possession. Mitts dipsy-doodled into the slot vs. Winnipeg which could've easily become a goal if the puck hadn't rebounded right to Hellebuyck lying a few feet outside the crease. Some posts for Mitts too this month.

Let's hope they bring it again tonight.

If this happens and Krebs plays with the same attitude he has been playing with while on the ice with Okposo and Girgs, I really think the Quinn-Krebs-JJ line will be a lot better than people expect. We've seen Girgs-Asplund-Okposo before so we know what we're getting there.

I suspect if the first period doesn't go well, the first change DG is making is to swap Asplund and Krebs.

He is so focused on finding ways to break down structure, his practices are designed to have the team making plays at a high tempo so those plays come more naturally in games, he pushes his players to be creative, to try things, to be fearless.

And you can see it: our players are constantly moving to open up spaces, then dropping pucks into those spaces, confident a teammate is darting hard into those holes. The puck carrier always has multiple options in the attacking zone. He runs into traffic, he has 2 guys nearby ready to bail him out. The team is always coming in layers. That is how they are being coached to play.

Victor Olofsson has hit a career high in goals a little over halfway through the season.

Tage Thompson and Jeff Skinner are well on their way to career years. Tyson Jost might get there too.

Cozens, Mittelstadt, Tuch and Dahlin have already topped their career-best totals. It’s January!

That is all happening because of the way this team is being coached.

 

Nice. I especially like the phrase "the team is always coming in layers...." That's an excellent description of how their plays evolve.

This conversation reminds me of a podcast previewing the NBA season. The conversation turned to the metaphysics of basketball. One of the analysts - a former player - offered that the super majority of defensive success is focus and effort, together with repetition and experience. I think that’s much the same in hockey, soccer, and all similar sports.

They may have clicked in Rochester but Quinn has 2 points in his last 17 games and JJ has 5 points in his last 21 games. They have been far from productive with the big boys. Hopefully they can turn it around but way more often than not Cozens has been the only productive player on that line. Krebs has 6 points in his last 18 games. Much more likely they get smoked in this game, no offense Wyld.
