This is what a captain is made of. It's not the best player (although 6 was very, very good).  It's not the loudest guy.  It's this.

And if the Sabres are retiring numbers cheaply, which I've historically argued they do, WHY NOT THIS GUY?

He actually was a rookie in this game.  He didn’t have the C yet.

And as he was escorted to the dressing room, he apparently yelled at Phil Esposito, "you're next, you ****ing @$$#0|€".

Then God told him to stop fighting and like Punch said later, 'I should have traded him years ago'. He went from big, tough strong, to the most overrated, most out of position defenseman around.

As you can tell, I didn't like him. Couldn't stand him in the later years as Sabre.

I know.  I also know what captains are made of.  That's the point.

Huh?  He was one of the most respected defencive defencemen around the league when Bowman traded him.  When he retired, the only retired defencemen with better career adjusted +/- were Brad Park and Bobby Orr.

Oh, and it was allegedly his wife who asked him to stop initiating fights.

I watched him play. Constantly out of position.  Was dicking around at center ice when bob kelly scored the cup clinching goal for philly, might have helped being in position . Everyone loved him so they overlooked his many mistakes. Please tell me you aren't comparing him to Orr and Park, because it sounds like you are.

God or his wife, both of them messed him up.

There is a great picture of the Schony v. Cashman fight taken from the catwalks at the Aud.  It is hanging in Marinaro's in Larkinville if you are ever in the area.  Last time I was in there which was a few years ago, the owner also had one or two of the collector item sabre's which were I believe a numbered limited edition item from back in the 70's

I saw this at an estate sale for $5. And laughed and laughed and laughed 😂

I have an extensive vinyl record collection.  This one is not in it.  We had the record when I was a kid, but it got destroyed from being played on the family stereo (grinder). I recall seeing a used copy while record shopping in Buffalo a few years back but passed on it.  Now I wish I would have bought it.

Schoeny did play some of his “hits” at our church fundraiser once.  He was accompanied by one of our priests.  Seeing him live back then was fun.  He really was a great guy in the community.

You should see the games from the 1975 semi-final which are online.  ( I found games 1, 2, and 6 on YouTube.)  In the final moments of the videos, the HNIC announcers marvel at how great a captain he became at 23.

For those who are much younger than we are, this is part of the reason why some of us are so nostalgic for the Gil Perreault era teams.

Dang, you are the master at finding cool YouTube stuff.  Dave Allen & 3 of the Sabres Habs games.  Sweet & thank you.

You are welcome.

With game 1, you can find both the NBC and CBC broadcasts.

Family dinner at Howard Johnson’s across from the airport. Couldn’t believe it when we turned on the radio and heard the score. Boston was a machine back then and this game marked the beginning of the golden era of Sabre hockey.
