On 32 Thoughts after the Second Intermission, Jeff Marek had this to say

Jeff Marek referred to the Sabres as a possible dark horse contender for Chychrun. Mentioned they are playing Power, Samuelsson and Dahlin a lot and there is a belief around the league that Adams has identified His Core and they do need to start putting together their team.

Chychrun has this year and two more years left at 4.6 Million

It would make for one heck of a top-4.  All left handed though.  Not sure if that matters.

What was Arizona’s reported ask?

It would be quite unusual but I don’t see why it can’t work.

edit: I should add - provided there’s another player comfortable on their off hand. We know Dahlin is. Has Power established he is? Not familiar as to whether Chychrun has.

Agree. Not waiting around until the end of the season would be a welcome and unexpected change - it’s not something we’ve seen in a while. If we are dealing 1sts it’s definitely a sign the priorities are shifting.

Hope it’s actually true.

If they are good enough, it won't matter.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Chances of this happening are probably in the single sigit percent.

This front office values picks and prospects, and 'building from within' way too much to pay the asking price Arizona will eventually get.

It's all about building from within to create a continuous pipeline to fuel a dynasty for these guys.

I believe Rosen, a lottery protected #1 and Ryan Johnson is what Buffalo would be comfortable with.

Arizona would prefer one of the three picks from last year’s draft.

We have a lot of F prospects so I’d be comfortable dealing Rosen, Ryan Johnson isn’t a lock to sign anyways and we’re talking a real player here in Chychrun so I’d be ok with that too, and I don’t want to give up Kulich or Savoie or something if that’s what they mean. So instead, the 1st is 2024 hopefully, right? Let it be unprotected and maybe that gets the deal done.

Not sure about a 2024 but sure one of the 2022 firsts Östlund preferably, johnson and Mitts or Ollie not sure they'd want it... Gotta keep young pipeline flowing and gonna need D prospects too.

I wonder how the Sabres’ analytics guys feel about Chychrun.

There is NFW the Sabres would, or should, trade an unprotected 2023 first-rounder.  But if the pick were top-5 protected, it should be on the table, along with most of their prospects other than Savoie, if they really like Chychrun.

Jokiharju pretty much has to be part of the package, right?  Because that's all the Sabres would've had to give up had Murray had his head out of his bippy and taken him when he was available back in '16.

The value that Arizona has in Chychrun is that he is a good young NHL player playing at a valued position and is contractually bound for the next few years. Why wouldn't they want a high end prospect like Savoie, another young player, such as Joki, who is playing in the league, plus prospects. I would love to acquire Chychrun. He would solidify or two top pairings and make our three pairings one of the better blue line groups in the league. It just seems to me that KA doesn't seem to be the type of GM who would make such a bold move. at least not just yet.

Last year was His Worse Year Analytically in a while, the previous two years He was fantastic.

I imagine it would be Top 15 protected, Östlund and Olofsson or Bishop’s Deal as Arizona needs to stay above the cap.
Olofsson is more attractive as they could retain 50% and flip Him at the deadline. The Coyotes could probably get a First for Him with another year left on His Deal.

Chychrun wasn’t the one who got away in that draft.
After the First Round was over Jerry Forton was walking to the Sabres Suite, when He passed a recently drafted prospect, who said “Jerry, I thought for sure the Sabres were going to take me”  That prospect was Charlie McAvoy.

Forton later said, I should have been more insistent at the final draft meetings.
That You should have Jerry.

I get the impression that Tim Murray didn’t make it easy to speak up and voice your opinion if you didn’t agree with him.

Well, if I'm AZ, I say no thanks on top-15 protected from the Sabres, as that would almost certainly mean the protection applies and the pick slips a year.  They're going to want a #1 in 2023, or at least a likely #1, coming back.  But I agree that the rest of your proposal is pretty compelling, and I wonder whether anyone else would beat, say, a top-7 protected 2023 #1, Östlund/Rosen, and VO.

I'll also note that while I have generally objected to trading VO as an alleged remedy to the Sabres' alleged surplus of scoring forwards, I am fine with trading him in a situation like this, where the Sabres are getting a putative really good player coming back.

Forgot about McAvoy being in THAT draft.  THAT would've been even better.  But really thought they were going to select Chychrun & not just because his family were friends w/ the owners.  If not Chychrun, thought it would be Sergachev.  In hindsight, Chychrun would've been the weakest of the 3 but still is far ahead of the actual pick & even the upgrade from tjat pick.

If he wasn’t it would pretty interesting D corps. Top four all left handed, bottom pair both right handed.

Here is the question though is Östlund the best prospect put on the table by any team?
Is the trade value of Olofsson as a PP Specialist/3rd with salary retained the highest of a rostered player.
The trade off for a Top 15 Protected Pick could be the they also get the highest of the Sabres 3 Second Rounders.
If they really want to get creative the Sabres could retain 50% of Olofsson’s Deal meaning any team gets Him for two playoff runs at 1.18 Million AAV, after Arizona moves Him.

BTW, I believe most of the people advocating for Olofsson to be traded, had a player coming in return.

Also a 2023 1st with Top 7 Protection would drop the value in the rest of the return IMO.
