Sabres Claim Tyson Jost Off Waivers; Bjork back to Rochester

Jost in in the last year of his contract, which is $2.25MM cash, $2MM cap hit.  He's a UFA after this season.

I'd guess they think he's a better depth forward than Bjork and thus an easy if inconsequential upgrade.

Tyson Jost just got cut by the Wild. He's a former 10th overall draft pick who's on the final year of a 2 year 4 million contract. He's 5'11 with limited production so far in the NHL.

Isn’t this dude more of exactly what they have?

So he's a C, 5'11", 187 lbs.  He's 24 and turns 25 in March.

He's from what looks like a suburb of Edmonton, was drafted #10 overall in 2016, then played his one season of college hockey (at U-ND, with 35 pts in 33 games), then played 4 full seasons with Colorado (including 40 playoff games, in which he had 10 pts; his playoff ice time was up and down in Colorado but in his last season there he played just under 16 min per game in 10 playoff games), then was traded to Minny at the deadline in his 5th season in Colorado.

That trade to Minny was last season.  He played in all 6 of their playoff games last year, had zero points in 11:36 per game of ice time, and they seem to have not liked what they saw in 21 RS games and 6 playoff games last year plus 12 RS games this year.

I hope this doesn't mean Zemgus is out long term.

He’s been ineffective and dull since signing his contract. He’s not a scrappy checker or a speedy forechecker or a faceoff specialist. He’s a guy who was drafted as a maybe offensive 2C and instead is playing as an AHL tweener.
Maybe HCDG can get him to spark, but this is not the pickup this team needed with the injuries in the bottom 6. And he’s not going to flip at the deadline for anything of value either.
But… he doesn’t block anyone.

I think it means Zemgus could be out a few weeks and that everyone in line in Rochester is also out for at least a couple of weeks.

He hasn’t played as an AHL tweeter.  He has been a consistent roster player on playoff teams the past 2-3 years.

That doesn’t mean he is any good, I just wanted to accurately represent the facts.

What’s the difference between a tweener and a guy who is in the roster but doesn’t do anything?  Seems pretty similar to me.

The term AHL tweeter implies someone who is up and down from the AHL, or not an NHL regular.

Someone who doesn’t bother to go look it up might think that this is a guy who has spent a fair amount of time in the AHL the past few years, when in fact he has been a constant presence on the roster of playoff teams.

I’m just making the fact of his situation clear.

I purposely went out of my way to mention that this doesn’t mean he is in fact a “good” player.

Does he play defense?

I love perimeter forwards.  Exactly what we need.

Honestly this is a nothing move.  Maybe someone is injured worse then we thought up front.

Fairly head scratching considering what we’ve witnessed with the D. The roster was begging for an upgrade on D.  Several were available via waivers.  They pick up a JAG forward.  Idk.

Does Scarlett come with him?

He benefitted from Colorado's depth. With Minnesota he's had 9 points in 33 games in 12:49/game and won 43% of his faceoffs and thrown 22 hits. He's played 38 minutes of PK time which means he's the 3rd forward pair out, and his Corsi relative in those SH minutes were not good compared to his team. He was a replacement-level player in Minnesota and that's who we're getting (again, unless HCDG unlocks him in some way). But the current Jost is a downgrade from Sheahan (who at least has some defensive skills and FO talent) who is signed to 2-way contract.

For the record, he was claimed off waivers and so he was on his way down to the AHL. And there's no telling when Minnesota would have bothered to bring him up again.

from my point of view Colorado's depth is evil benefited from him!

I think I’ve made my point pretty clear.  Everything in the posts above, and everything I’ve said are both true.

Well then you are lost!

Note: The Avalanche traded him away leading up to their Cup win. And then won despite losing Kadri for a bit at the center spine because Compher was fine. Jost was addition by subtraction and Nico Sturm was a better temporary fit for Colorado's 4th line.
