These two paragraphs from the article sum it all up.  😞

Today, my mom is still in recovery and although it is the same answer every time someone asks me, it is true, she is improving every day. She is dealing with significant expressive aphasia and significant memory issues. She can read, write, and understand pretty well, but she has trouble finding the words to respond. It is hard to deal with and it takes a lot of patience to communicate with her, but I thank God every day that we can still communicate with her at all. The doctors continue to be blown away by her recovery, considering where she started, and her determination is the driving force of that.

My mom is the president and owner of both the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bills. She loved to work. She did everything and our family constantly told her how she needs to slow down and take time for herself. She was the woman behind my dad’s success and my dad would happily admit that. She jumped into this journey with him and learned many lessons along the way, breaking a lot of barriers. She was the shift in culture, positivity, and the heartbeat of many of the employees. She gave everyone so much of her time and effort. She lived it and loved it, and it was felt by everyone she met. Now we come to the realization that all of that is most likely gone. That she won’t be able to be that person anymore.

How very sad.  Nothing but love and respect for the Pegula family.

I’m glad she’s alive & has family to help her, good luck to her in her recovery. The Bills & Sabres (so far) record wise got so much better this past season for a reason, hopefully the family can pass the torch to the new generation sooner & they can stay hands off. The past 10 years of hockey has been difficult to watch, this season has been a savior for me mentally.

I get this completely, me and my stepdad are still recovering from 2.5 weeks ICU + funeral.  Its a month on autopilot, never sleeping and then hitting a wall when she is gone forever.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Jessica's perspective is on point, being grateful for her recovery and the time they continue to have together.

I had held out hope for better news. It’s genuinely sad to learn that she’s not going to return to her full pre-incident self.

It is, however, encouraging to see Jessica signaling her ability to step forward.

As a wise mentor once related to me about any multi-generational family business in crisis:  “Do they have a ‘Michael?’” A “Sonny” will get sh1t done, but is too brash. A “Fredo” ... well, enough said. And so on. You gotta have a Michael in order for the business to survive and thrive.

Or a Michaela.

I get the impression that Jessica will be stepping into Her Mom’s Role eventually.

I’m guessing sooner rather than later.  Sounds like Terry is wearing a lot of hats.

Considering she in her 20’s and a pro tennis player, that is a long long way from being team president of two professional sports teams.

Boy, that had to make the Damar Hamlin incident even more emotionally tolling for the team.

For the Pegulas, for sure. I didn't get the sense from the essay that anyone on the team knew how closely the 2 things were connected at the time Damar went down.

I don’t think the players had any idea of the details of her illness.

Your implication here is somewhat disgusting.

8 posts in before getting an ignore, that's an accomplishment. This post seems to reveal a lot about your character.

I can only imagine what the Pegula's felt watching the Damar Hamlin situation unfold. I wish them the best and there is always hope for her improved recovery.

I knew of a local car dealership owner  in West Seneca who had a major stroke and was in similar condition. He has recovered some now living in California. Really sad.

It’s gotta make him think. Lots on his plate.

Sad that she likely won't be the same as prior to her injury.

Glad that we now know what happened.  Didn't ask publicly for the information, but again am glad we have it.  The family did & does have the right to privacy.  But sports teams aren't like normal businesses.  The term fan is short for fanatic & those of us that waste so many of our few precious hours on this Earth opining & obsessing about something so seemingly insignificant in the grand scheme like the travails of a sports team are pretty much by definition fanatics.

We live & breathe this team & many of us also live & breathe the Bills & Bandits too.  (And we like the Amerks, some here even live & breathe them too.  We won't get into the Kin-ig-hit Hawks.)  As we do live & breathe these teams (and let's face it, millions more live and breathe their direct competitors) and we really do love the teams & by extention those associated with the teams, there is an anxiety that many feel from not knowing what is happening.  Supporting a small market's franchises we've all dealt with multiple rumors of our favorite teams relocating & some local teams have pulled up stakes never to return.  Not knowing whether someone that many fans end up loving as if they were our own family members will be / is OK & the subsequent uncertainty that carries with it for so many ancillary items is stressful in its own way.

They don't owe us updates, but because of that weird relationship fanatics have with the object of their fandom, it is good that those entrusted with the stewardship of the object(s) of our obsession have finally gotten to a point where they were comfortable sharing this with us.  The news isn't particularly good, but knowing is somehow settling.  A sincere thank you to Jessica Pegula for that.

That's great that Kelly had learned CPR so recently.  Seems that decision literally saved her mother's life & helped make whatever recovery she has more complete than it would've been had she miraculously lasted until the paramedics got to her without the intervening CPR.  Hopefully many of us that haven't learned it or learned it years ago & might have forgotten much will now get around to actually getting certified.

Hopefully Kim Pegula will continue to improve as her recovery progresses.  Fortunately for her, they can afford the best specialists and treatments that there are.  If you're inclined to pray, hopefully you'll do so for her continued recovery.

Can imagine what they're going through, but can't imagine how surreal it is when one goes through something like this publicly.  One thing they have going for them because of their status as public figures is there are literally millions of people pulling for her and wishing her a full recovery.  That can't hurt any and could even be beneficial.

I was hoping this thread would avoid posts like this. Should have known better.

Brain injuries are horrifying. My hope is that she still has all her physical faculties (walking and both hands) as that adds another layer on top of the loss of memory and mental issues (lapses, speech, cognition). Nothing is more heartbreaking than watching someone who knows exactly what they want to do (stand) be unable due to injury.

It hasn’t been more difficult than to have read this comment. Congratulations on your awfulness.
