All coaches are hired to be fired.  Isn't that the general rule in all pro sports.  Also how many coaches have every won a Cup with more than one team besides Bowman? The answer is 1 and that is Dick Irvin in the 1930's and 40's with Tor and Mon.   Ruff, Maurice and Vigneault all have 722 to 7823 wins and zero Cups.

Good coaches usually have to go through the carousel a few times before finding the right situation.  For example, Quenneville got his during his 3rd job, Trotz his second, Laviolette his second, and Sutter his 4th.

I guess Lou being Lou decided it was time to put his stamp on this version of the NYI.  Hard to question Lou given his track record.

Easy to question him. What's he done to improve the islanders? They are a boring team with few young players and almost no prospect pool. It's been a decade since Lou did anything and you gotta question his understanding of where the game is at this point.

He built a team to grind out 2-1 wins relying on great goaltending in a league where guys like MacKinnon, Crosby, McDavid, Matthews play.

I didn't realize he'd been there since 2018.  The prospect pool looks thin.  Outside Holmstrom, Raty and DuFour, there isn't much there.  They do have a very talented but aging forward group and great goaltending.  They need Granato to coach them up.  They probably have to move Varlamov to add some D.

There's not enough to coach up. I don't think their forwards as a group are very talented at all. Outside of Barzal name another forward that would concern you.

If the league is moving towards a more open offensive style, then why would he get another gig quickly?

Isn't LV more built for offense instead of what Trotz specializes in?

League is, but there's always teams who are crap or at least underachieving who would think winning record first. Build a strong base with him at the helm. If this was last year 90% of this group would be for hiring him right away.

I kind of hope Vegas does hire him. They would win more games and make the playoffs probably, but Jack gonna hate that style and all Trotz demands.

How true it is that all coaches are hired to be fired. Bum Phillips would totally agree with you.

This is something of a fallacy regarding Trotz: He tailors how his teams play based on the roster he has. The Caps certainly didn't play a low event style because they had tons of skilled players. The Isles didn't have lots of skilled players. Think Pat Riley coaching the Showtime Lakers and then coaching the 90's Knicks that won by beating the living ***** out of tbeir opponents

Trotz definitely demands that his teams play a structured, responsible defensive game.  That doesn’t mean that his teams can’t score, but those Caps teams had to go through an adjustment for a couple years as they learned how to play the type of defensive game he required of them.

Nelson maybe but Lee, nope. They just aren't very threatening.

Lee is a yearly 25+ goal scorer.  I get your overall point, but let’s not short change Lee too much.

Hate to say it, but he would be a great coach for the leafs, fix their defense.

Yeah, the focus is largely on the teams what missed the playoffs as possible destinations for Trotz. There are teams in the playoffs that could make a change too.  If the Leafs lose rd 1 he could be a candidate there. Dallas seems ready made for Trotz if this is it for Bowness.

Out of curiosity… with the new lottery rules, if a team between 12-16 wins the first lottery, and then a bottom ten team wins the second lottery, do they still move up to second overall? Or do they move up to first overall?

That’s a good question.

The first winner moves up 10 spots or to first overall. The second winner moves up 10 spots or to second overall.

So if a team 12-16 wins the lottery, then Montreal automatically gets the first pick?

My understanding is yes. I guess Montreal could win the 2nd overall pick in the 2nd drawing... so that would be a redraw?

Let's be concrete:

Suppose the Islanders win the lottery.  They move up 10 spots.  Then New Jersey wins 2nd place.  They go to 2nd?

A more baffling example:

Suppose the #12 team wins the lottery.  They move to #2.  Now a bottom 10 team wins 2nd place.  They go where?

I'd assume they'd go to 3.

Only the NHL could create a lottery system where you can't be sure where a team drafts even after the lottery.

"threatening". Kind of a dumb word to describe hockey players but whatever. Lee is a leader and provides a strong net front presence. You going to argue adding him to any team doesn't make that team better? We could definitely use that.

Nice informative rebuttal. 5 stars.

I don't have anything to rebutt.

No, I'm not.

Might as well be there.  As long as he's out of the east, it's good.

Do you really think he'd join on out there at the beginning of the rebuild?  (Presuming that's the direction they're heading.)  You think they might just retool on the run?

Retool, but I would surprised if he signed here.

Winnipeg interviewing Trotz. That would be a good fit imo. They were close to playing Trotz style hockey in the bubble season. Won't take a lot to get them to play his way and be a tough team to play against.

Doesn’t he coach dead puck era style? Taking the air out of the puck if you will.  How many nonsensical adjacent sports references can I make in one post?  I’m taking it to the house!!

None the less, GMs need to be held accountable for hiring guys like that.  Look at Meatballs.  He’s got the kids flying. Florida, Tampa, Colorado.  All the current good teams are employing uptempo styles, why keep letting teams set your league back to 1980.  Let’s have fun.

I don’t see Scheifele being a fit with Trotz. Then again, if Ovie could adapt, perhaps he can, too.
