This seems to have flown under the radar, but is hilarious.

Reminds me of a sign I saw at a nudist colony "Gentleman playing leapfrog are requested to complete their leaps."

I mean it’s probably not fair that Polish people are the most charming, best looking, greatest people on earth and then also ask them to be good at hockey too.

Don’t feel bad. I’m English and Scottish, and both countries aren’t known for producing stellar hockey stars. However, there was Mariusz Czerkawski. I thought you might have remembered him from at least 10-15 years ago.

Hockey was/is a massive part of Russia's 20th century culture.

I wonder if that alone has had an influence on Poland's view of the sport.

OTOH, the regions of the former Czech Republic embraced hockey, notwithstanding their former imperialist occupier's affection for the sport.

But every culture is different. My sense is that Poland has a unique, singular antipathy for Russia.

That would not surprise me one bit. There’s quite a bit of history and bad blood between those two countries. The Katyn Forest massacre is still fresh on the minds of those who lived to tell about it, and was made all the more raw when an official Polish delegation that was on their way to memorialize the event died in a plane crash in 2010.

With so many countries in that part of the world having really good national teams or other in-house competitive leagues, why doesn’t a country large as Poland have its own hockey infrastructure?

Easy explanation. Poland isn't a very rich country and they have next to no indoor arenas. Almost all of the hockey is played outdoors on the Baltic Sea. When a player gets a breakaway, they never see him again......

The have a team.  It's called the Buffalo Sabres.

Seriously, the Buffalo metro area has the highest % of people of Polish decent in the US.  Cheektowaga is almost 40% Polish.  Why shouldn't Buffalo be designated Poland's team.

up through the 70s in Sloan, residents wouldn’t sell their house to another person unless they were Polish.

Had family in Sloan.  I’m not convinced they were worried about Germans moving in.
