blugold43 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 i remember him intimating that he was getting worn out after the 04 season. of course, we were all worn out after 04! i have been listening to him call the games this year and he sounds great again. if he does decide to go, he'll certainly be missed. i hope the sabres can somehow send him out a winner.
SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Say it ain't so Rick, say it ain't so.
blugold43 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 btw dude, that reminds me...you have the best friggn handle on this board.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 I paid the $1 (Canadian, what is that like 43 cents?) to read the dumb story ... he never says he is retiring ... he said the end is in sight, and it sounded like it could be after this season ... but he never actually says that. basically, what we already knew. He's getting old, gonna retire at some point.

Stoner Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Yeah, it sounds like of vague. "Not tomorrow" to me means not this year. But, being 63... soon. It's hard to imagine Sabres hockey without him. He is too modest -- he is the voice of the Sabres. It's a nice thought, though, to leave that title to Ted Darling.

I couldn't imagine anyone else doing the play by play and color commentary, although I though Roby did a decent job of filling in for Lorenz; but I did notice RJ did not called him "partner" during the game.

I like Jim and everything but how many goals has he claimed went five hole that actually went under the goalies arm. I've seen it a few times this year, no big deal, just a little pet peeve.
topshelfcookies Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Channel 4 had a similar story on their 11pm news last night, and RJ didn't really say anything of consequence there either. He did mention that the travel throughout the year was the biggest drag. I actually thought that RJ sounded completely re-energized by the playoffs. In his pre-game interview on WGR with Schopp and Bulldog he sounded more chipper and excited than he has since the beginning of the season. You gotta think that these past 5 years have been tough on RJ on Lorentz too...the Sabres just haven't been that much fun to watch in recent years.
Knightrider Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 Personally, I think of him as the voice of the Buffalo Sabres. I know he doesn't like to be referred to as that out of respect, but, Ted's been gone for quite a while now. The "voice" shouldn't be silent, and really never was. It was just a smooth handoff.
Corp000085 Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 RJ will never admit it, but he is the voice of the sabres. Sure, ted darling was first, and he basically died on the job, but RJ has earned that title through his hard work, and the listening ears of the fans. As for the article, he didn't give up much, but i'm sure he'd retire if we win the cup. If the sabres do indeed go deep, i could see him staying on for the ride for the next few years.

He's been the voice of the Sabres forever in my mind--I listened to many more games than I watched in my early years. When he is replaced, and it is of course inevitable, I hope the Sabres do a better job than the Bills did in replacing Van Miller.

Just ask todd collins, brian griese, or the guy who coached green bay right after lombardi. Jesus Christ could decend from heaven, go to syracuse as a broadcast major, and still be crapped on just for replacing rick.
haseoke Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 i dont think jesus would do that....

haseoke Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 ask those people with the bracelets. i think theyre supposed to know.
SabresForCup Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 I'm Canadian I I bought today's National Post so I've read the article. Basically, it is just saying that his career's drawing to an end. He never says that he is retiring at the end of the season.

Murphy was a decent analyst; he just doesn't have the knack for describing the flow of a game as it unfolds.

JujuFish Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 WWJD? I'd sit back and enjoy watching the Sabres coast to a Stanley Cup championship, 16-0. ...We ARE talking about me, right? :P
