And so it begins.

Montreal trades Toffoli to Calg for a 1st, a 5th, Tyler Pillick (Rem's brother) and prospect Emil Heineman (Calg got him from Fla in the Sam Bennett deal).  Toffoli has two years left at 4.25.

More than Hall and was part of a finals run. Also knew at the time this was a much better signing.

Pretty much a throw away by Montreal..they are a complete mess and make our organization look downright excellent! The sad thing about the Habs is they really do not have any great prospects in great numbers either so their future sure is bleak...

Do we call this trade a deadline trade when the deadline isn’t for 5 weeks?

Yes.

One trade almost always begins the trickle that ends with torrent that is the trade deadline.  Last year our trade of Staal for two picks kicked off the trade deadline "season" nearly 3 weeks before the deadline.  Trading a top 6 forward for a 1st rd pick I think qualifies for 1st move of the season.

FYI: 5 weeks or more seems about the right time to kickoff the trade deadline season.

Back in the 2019-2020 season the big Taylor Hall trade out of NJ in mid December 6 weeks before the deadline signaled a pick up in trade activity.  The year prior the GMs were dealing nearly daily starting Dec 28th, but the big deals starting with the Rask/Niederreiter trade in mid Jan followed by the Jake Muzzin (for a 1st & 2 players) in 10 days later.

I'd trade a Stanley Cup run followed by being dead last in the league for the past decade +  of Sabres hockey in a heartbeat.

We’re doing pretty good with that second part.

Semantics, but would call the month before the Trade Deadline, Trade Season.

The Trade Deadline is the last 24 hours (or even less) of Trade Season.

LOL. The 6th round pick that Botts deemed wasn’t worthy of an ELC. What a joke Botts was.

I feel like Hagel is the exception to the rule. I don’t think anything he did post draft before the AHL was noteworthy.  Should a GM have the ability to determine whether or not a kid is gonna make it, probably.  It’s a pretty finite skill to have.

Really? I was sure we declined to offer him a contract.

By June 1, 2018, the Sabres were unable to sign Hagel to a contract and relinquished their rights to him, allowing him to become eligible for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.[11] He was subsequently invited to the Montreal.

Was trying to find a link but couldn't find one but this on Wikipedia
