I’ve been a Sabres fan since the early 2000’s. I love the team but know that they won’t be making the playoffs. Now I know that it’s impossible to love 2 teams the same. However, i’ve lost interest completely in hockey this year. I’m not sure if it’s just the Sabres hopelessness mixed in with the long drought or the fact that the Bills season just ended and I’m in a funk. But I’m looking for a team to follow this year once the playoffs start. I love the sport but get depressed when I think about it. I have a few possible choices in mind

1. Rangers - they have Drury as their GM. Who doesn’t love Drury?

2. Panthers - Much respect for Joe Thornton. He has been playing forever and still no championship.

3. Golden Knights - I believe Jack Eichel wanted to stay in Buffalo but the team pushed him out the door. He’s a generational talent and I still like him.

4. Canes or Predators - I like the energy that the fans in the building have in the playoffs. Don’t know much about the players.

5. Whoever plays against Boston

Does anyone else have suggestions?

Pick a teams whose fans you like, because you can be genuinely happy for their success.  I also root for cities which I felt were "wronged" somehow by the league such as the victims of tilted officiating or the league driving stars from it to bigger markets.

Never, never ever mention thinking about rooting for the Canes. F that team.

For me, Vegas is one of my favorite cities and have taken them on as a 2nd team. Jack going there makes it even easier to root for them.

It’s not the hurricanes fault that we had fluke injuries

just like in football how people hate The titans. It wasn’t the titans idea to make the call on the field a backwards lateral

There is no other team.  Suck it up and deal with the misery and darkness like the rest of us.

A therapy pet helps.

This guy right here.  He’s a NYC Centric DB that has no ties to the Sabres.  I liked him enough when he was here but I have no use for his Yankee loving ass.

I’d pick a western team; Colorado or Anaheim. I can’t root for Vegas because I don’t want Eichel pulling an O’Reilly playoff run and making us feel even worse.

Follow the Amerks.

Not as interesting at the moment due to injuries and call-ups, but they have been entertaining and good for my hopium supply this year.

This. The Sabres of the last several years have made it easy to just not watch hockey.

I hear that Benedict Arnold is looking for you.

When the Sabres aren’t in the playoffs, which is... often?, just go with whatever team you find fun to watch. There’s a playing style that’ll catch your heart, or a player, or an underdog...  or just appreciate how good Tampa is. Then, enjoy for a round or two.
Alternately, enjoy all the ex-Sabres that are out there. Foligno and the Wild. Reino and the Cats. Beaulieu and the Jets.

Just don’t come back to the Sabres when they get good again.

I’m torn about sending the youts back to Rochester.  As an Amerks fan, I’d love to see all of them back for a playoff run.

Nonsense. There’s always room on any bandwagon or in any fandom. Young or old. New or experienced. Or even if you’re trying to catch that really cute girl/boy’s eye and want to show a common interest in whatever it is. Hell, even if it’s just because you like the colors. Gatekeeping is a waste of time.
Enjoy the game. Enjoy the skill on display. Enjoy the drama. That’s what sport is for.

All excellent ideas. I would also recommend yachting, getting more involved in your children's sports careers, and focusing more on professional football.

Try Dynamo Minsk in the KHL. Dead last.  No one wants to play there.

MOPO, it's okay to have a second team out west.  If you prefer a tough, physical style of play go with Nashville. If your preference is speed and skill choose Colorado. Minnesota is a good mix of both. I'm partial to Nashville myself.

I think it's fine to have B, C, even D teams. Come playoff time I usually cheer for underdogs and similar to your Boston hate, anybody who plays against the Leafs. As long as the Leafs lose I'm fine with the eventual cup winner.

Otherwise, to keep enjoying watching hockey in general, it depends on what style of play you like best. Nashville is living up to Smashville this year. Canes are fast high energy. Tampa is the star power team for sure. Depends what you like.

Personally, for example, going to probably watch the Anaheim Toronto game tonight. Really like what Anaheim's doing with their rebuild. It's a bit frustrating to see how much faster and better their rebuild is than ours, but it's also a model for what we could be as well.

and watch the Olympics of course.
