*Paul Maurice is no longer at the helm of the Winnipeg Jets.

The team announced on Friday that Maurice has resigned as Jets head coach, adding that assistant Dave Lowry will serve as Winnipeg's interim coach after Maurice's departure.

An emotional Maurice met with the media following the announcement to explain his decision, saying he stepped away because the team needed a new voice.*

 

The loss to the Sabres appears to be the proverbial straw.

 

*Winnipeg's 2021-22 campaign has gotten off to a pedestrian start, with a 13-10-5 record and fifth place in the Central Division. The Jets dropped what ended up being their final game under Maurice on Tuesday, a 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.*

Now that is a quitter.  I can’t see this decision helping him find an NHL HC job in the future.

It sure sounded to me like his future as HC wasn't terribly important to him at that moment.

Maurice always comes across very well and is a career coach.

Couldn't have been an easy decision. Few people are wise of enough to recognize when it must be made, or privileged enough to be in a situation to make it.

Absolutely true, although resigning instead of firing is a little unique.

I'd even go so far to say that if somebody tracked teams "causing" midseason coach changes over the past 25 years, Sabres would be the number one perpetrator by far.

Dude has been a head coach since 95, without interruption.  I think a little break is warranted.

Yes, your right.  My initial thought was a bit jaded.  He has been around the block.   Sounds like burn out.  If his message isn’t getting through then its a good move.

He resigned because he was going to get fired.

Kudos for the Jets for letting him resign with dignity.

Jets will have a tough time making the post season with players like Scheifele playing like he doesn't give a ***** when he should be showing management why he should be the next captain. 

It's a good thing the NHL probably isn't going to the olympics, it saves face for Scheifele because he wasn't going to go playing the way he is this year.

We could probably package Butcher and Eakin for Scheifele in a trade.

Seriously, I don't want to trade him I want him to start playing better. If Scheif and Ehlers get going with the way PLD and KC are playing this year, we'll make the playoffs. 

That, to me, is Lowry's challenge. Get all the players going at the same time. 

I honestly think we see the coaching staff fired this off-season.

This is what happens when you have players who feel they were born to be Jets. The Sabres don’t have this problem any longer. They would give anything to be able to bleed blue and gold.

Agreed. Not to push religion, but the parallel is strikingly similar to that of a pastor who needs a sabbatical. Burn out is very high in that particular calling if we look at the stats.

I think Maurice is an excellent coach for a young, up and coming team. I don't think he is the right coach to get them far into the playoffs, if his teams make it to the playoffs.

A really good educator/communicator but he has flaws that he has had for years.

I don't see him going back into coaching but I do see him coming back into hte organization in a few years. He's making 3m for the rest of the season, he's in no rush.
