So we traded Grigorenko, Zadorov, Compher and a high 2nd for Thompson, Johnson and what we got for McGinn.  That seems fair.

When put that way it wasn't exactly the worst deal of the century.

I jammed my wanker in a meat grinder today. Y’all should try it.

Who won?  The Blues.

The Sabres lost on ROR twice.

I'm not sure we lost the Colorado vs. Sabres trade.  They basically got two depth players (Compher and Zadorov), a 3rd pairing D and a 3rd line Forward while we got ROR, a bona fide top 25 NHL center and a two way force who performed very well for us.

Obviously incompetent management failed to build a team around him and Jack and lead to us getting killed in the ROR to Stl trade.  Like Colorado, we'll likely end up with a 3rd line forward (Thompson) and a 2/3 pairing D (Johnson).

The rule of he who gets the best player in the deal usually wins the deal hold true for both ROR trades.

Odds are once Jack is dealt we'll likely see similar results unless we get a Krebs, Zegras, or Lafreniere back in the deal.

I liked how the guy put it.  It isn't the total trainwreck that its made out to be... yet.  Thompsons obviously been a dud, but he's still relatively young so there is some unknown there.  And Johnson hasn't played yet so its hard to call him a failure.

But at least we “stole” Carter Hutton away from the Blues!

oh, is that a third loss for us?

Hey, Carter was good for us the for the first 10 games of each year he was with the Sabres.  Except last year and the year before that.

And now he is off to win the Conn Smyth trophy for the Coyotes 😇

He definitely had some great saves and games for the Sabres but certainly a great deal of soft goals and losses too.  I specifically remember the season previews in past years where they would question if Hutton was up to the task.  He would play great for a few games and then lose it.  Last season was all about having his eyesight corrected and he would be good again.  Oh well.

At least he won't have high expectations in Arizona.

So we gave up Zadarov, Compher, the Selke/Calder/Stanley winning ROR for Thompson and Johnson.

Well... They also had ROR for 3 years.  So... Zadorov and Compher for 3 years of ROR.  Teams have given up similar returns for 1 year rentals honestly.

The ROR trade was clearly pretty bad, but it's not "finished" yet.  Johnson could end up being a solid top 4 dman or something for the team for 10 years, we really have no idea.

The ROR trade was probably our worst in franchise history.  Even if Johnson is a top 4 damm for 10 years, we gave away a Selke winner with offensive skill.    This is what happens when you change GMs every 3 years and your at the mercy of Team Presidents/Owners that know nothing about the game but think they do.

The Cloutier trade is tough to beat.  Took the Sabres a decade to win another playoff series and even longer to find a guy that would consistently win faceoffs.

But, yeah, the O'Reilly trade edges it out.

The playoffs in 84 and 85 were true suffering!

The Hasek to Detroit trade cannot be beaten for worst ever.  It’s not even close.

This.

Although, I’d say the Barrasso trade is pretty damn close.

The McNab trade is probably 3rd, followed by the ROR trade.

Yeah, it’s probably worse.  The daft pick never played and Kozlov hated it here.  I guessed he forced his way out.  Even then we had problems with certain players.

Players in the 60’s and 70’s, it seemed like they just played.
