7 years was bad... 8 years is bad but also worse.

Don't these sign and trade 8 year deals have potential issues if the player retires before the end of the contract?  Back to the team that signed him taking the cap hit?

I don’t believe they’re sign and trades. They are acquiring the UFA rights which includes the rights to sign the player to an 8 year deal.

Also forgot Seth Jones obviously isn’t a UFA so he is definitely just signing the deal with Chicago.

Sure do

There would be no recapture because the signing team did not gain any salary cap benefit in the deal since they left before playing a second of the deal.

That team got everything right, from expansion to marketing.    Seattle already failed the first one.

Botterill is part of Seattle... they gonna be boring.

Thanks for clarifying.  It's UFA's that would have to be signed to 8 year max by the team holding his rights, then it's a sign and trade.

Toronto is considering this for Zach Hyman and the Oilers which seemed risky to me for Toronto depending on the compensation.

I think they will try for Jack or Sam though.

Hell we could pick Seatlle appart if they come for both 😛

It’s not. If a team acquires a player’s UFA rights they are eligible to sign them to an 8 year deal.

Even if the original team had to sign the deal (they don’t) there’s zero recapture risk because they did not benefit from the contract.

This is 100% correct. You need vets. If you sit there and just collect picks and prospects forever you will get absolutely nowhere.
