Slack_in_MA Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Loved watching him and the French Connection as a kid. I always thought he had a cool name. RIP. 2 Quote

Pimlach Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 RIP #14. Great player who respected the jersey and loved being a Buffalo Sabre. 6 Quote
nfreeman Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 The great ones from earlier generations continue to slip through our fingers. We’ll miss you Rene. You were a great Sabre. Thanks for the memories. Gone but not forgotten. 5 Quote
Broken Ankles Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 RIP Rene. One of my first autographs ever in 1976. He was my favorite of the French Connection. 3 Quote
Spun Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 I used to play high school hockey at the Aud. One Sunday morning, our game was cancelled because some of the Sabres wanted to practice. Some of us decided to stick around and watch the Sabres practice. One of my teammates decided to ask the Sabres if they needed another player. The Sabres said sure come on out. So my teammate laced up and climbed out on to the ice. My teammate was able to play with the Sabres for a few minutes until an Aud staffer caught on and told him to get off the ice. Rene Robert was one of the players! The fog goal was a classic! The French Connection made the Sabres formidable! Farewell Rene, thanks for the wonderful memories! 3 5 Quote
Scottysabres Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 My deepest sympathy's to the Robert family, the Sabres and fans overall. RIP Renee, thank you for all of the wonderful memories. I'll raise up a frosty one this evening in your honor. 3 Quote
LabattBlue Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 I remember when we used to have signatures here, that for the longest time, I had an exchange between Rene Robert and Larry Quinn as my signature, that ended with Robert putting Quinn in his place. 😂 6 2 Quote

When I was five, after showing no interest in electronics whatsoever, I asked for a do-it-yourself radio for Christmas. A month or so later, my parents heard a noise from my bedroom well after my 8pm bedtime. They opened the door to find that I had a game against Vancouver on the radio. Probably where my insomnia began. 3 1 1 Quote
Pimlach Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Great stories. I started those early years in the Aud with the Bisons. Loved them and loved the Aud. The Sabres were all the rage in 1970. Gil, Punch, and raising the roof. Punch drafted Martin mostly because he knew he skate with him. They tried many on RW. Robert clicked immediately. The sting of losing fan favorite Eddie “the Entertainer “ Shack was barely a mosquito bite. Rene really played a balanced game. He did everything well and he had some sandpaper to his game too. I met him several times. Cool dude and a polite gentleman. Nice 70’s haircut and Stache. He loved being a Sabre. I am sure the current state of this franchise was disturbing to him. 5 Quote
BuffalOhio Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 So very saddening. My very first favorite right winger. Rest in peace, Rene. May your blades be forever sharp on that ice rink in the sky. I look forward to skating with you some day. 2 Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Yet another boyhood hero passes on to the great beyond. May God bless him. May God bless and guide his family and friends at this difficult time. 2 Quote
Stoner Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 In his book, Bob Swados called Rene a "clubhouse lawyer." So his advocacy for the fans during the Quinn years was not surprising. And I'm sure some of the quotes leaked to The Athletic came straight from Robert. His trade to Colorado Bowman's first offseason (Oct. 1979) marked the beginning of the end of the 70s Sabres. 2 Quote

Marvin Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 My wife told me that when she was 12, she rode her bike from Alden to Danny Gare's house. 35 years later, she was working on a fundraiser for Roswell Park with the Buffalo Sabres alumni and goes up to Gare asking if he remembered the incident. Gare did and called over Robert to ask if Rene remembered Danny telling him about the crazy kid riding her bike to say "hi" to him. Robert nodded, looked at my wife, and said, "he was right -- you were crazy! And what the hell did your parents have to say about it?" Gare had told everyone in the dressing room about it over the years. Rene brought others over as Gare was talking with my wife. 6 3 Quote
Popular Post BMWR100RT Posted June 23, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted June 23, 2021 RIP Rene. I know every Sabres fan as old as me has a Rene story. Here is mine I've told before. I listened and watched the Sabres from the time they were an expansion team, but my first #buffalosabres hockey game was the famous "Fog" game 4 of the 1975 Stanley Cup Finals when I was 14. Dad somehow scored tickets as he was working for NYSEG and had some connections. The seats were right where the players exit. When Rene Robert scored in overtime to win I had never had that kind of sports joy and really haven't since. Here's a few pics I took with my Dad's work Polaroid camera he let me take. There was a camera right behind me and clearly it took the footage here 45 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlNHmgBzPwY&t=24s Rene was a lot of fun and lived life large and now the 2nd gone from the famed French Connection. Thanks for all the great memories! 3 6 1 Quote
