Pimlach Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 (edited) Part of my youth.  Growing up a sports fan in Buffalo,  Rick was tops.   Erv, Rick and Tom -  that was growing up in the 60’s, 70’s and beyond.   RIP Edited March 26, 2021 by Pimlach 4 Quote
Scottysabres Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 RIP Rick. And another part of my youth gone. 2 Quote

Kong Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 I was working in a camera shop in the 1990s when Irv Weinstein walked in. I ended up waiting on Irv and commented about the recently-retired Rick Azar, saying that he really aged gracefully. To that Irv said: "Do you mean that I'm not aging gracefully?"Â RIP Rick, a class act. 1 Quote
gilbert11 Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 Major memory from my youth. In high school I talked a lot about sports so some classmates called me ‘Rick Azar’.  Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 As a Sabre fan growing up in Toronto I fondly recall getting my Sabre updates from Rick. RIP. Quote
LabattBlue Posted March 26, 2021 Author Report Posted March 26, 2021 It was great growing up with Irv, Rick and Tom. Â They ruled the local news wars for decades. Â Quote
bob_sauve28 Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 I remember him going to the Buffalo Airport right after the big trade with Detroit in 1981? and interview Jim Schoenfeld who was crying. He hugged Rick and Rick just couldn't talk either. Very moving moment.  RIP Rick. 1 Quote

Stoner Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 Rick had gravitas. The voice, the silver hair. Whether it was near-exclusivity in the market or genuine, honest craftsmanship, he came to be an authority. His reporting was to be believed, and the rare editorial was powerful, coming from him. Same with Van and, later, Ed. There not only aren't sports anchors like them anymore, there isn't even an opportunity to do so. I couldn't tell you who the anchors are now. We don't think we need them anymore. But we needed Rick and were lucky to have him. Quote

I have to disagree with you there. Here in the Dallas market, Dale Hansen is exactly dat. He tells it the way he sees it. Quote
