Quinn should not be anywhere near the active roster right now.

Agreed.

Wonder if there's some wrinkle from the CHL/NHL agreement that has them keeping him officially on the roster rather than any of the guys they put on the taxi squad, any of whom have smaller cap hits.

What happened to the poster that was writing the great ones two seasons ago?

Are they still not participating on SS lately?

Are you talking about 26 Corner Blitz? That may be from longer than two years ago, but he had some good ones.

Like everything else, those ratings are just one evaluation method. Tage, is primed for a huge year.
Cozens and Skinner together will make up a better then average third line.

KO is clearly good enough.

Rieder will be a valuable role player that is better then that rating.

That leaves two spots you are concerned about and clearly Buffalo has a higher opinion of Eakin then most.

Lazar is a former first round pick who has accepted his role as a checking center/ face off specialist.

All that being said, R2 will be up by mid season if he ends up having the ability you think he has.

I personally feel Asplund will be a better pro then Casey but if you are right, Casey has a chance to earn his ice time if he isn’t part of a deal for a goalie.

Finally, and our resident analytics guru’s can verify if they have the right data, analytics has resulted in teams relying more  on their top two lines for a larger portion of ice time and offensive production. The more important difference this year is that we have a potentially top notch number two line.

I love your passion and appreciate your opinion. Isn’t it great that we will soon find out which one of us was closer to right. I’m quite sure we both want the same results from the team.

You are astute and perspicacious.

The lower lines are not as decrepit as they are being portrayed. On the one hand there is intense criticism that placing Skinner on a third line is a misuse of his talents without acknowledging the possibility that he can be part of a lower line that is significantly upgraded. A line composed with Skinner, Cozens and whomever is an intriguing line with more scoring potential than we have had from a lower line in a long time.

I want to see Skinner on a second line because I strongly believe that if he can get back to his prolific scoring form it will boost the team. But he has to earn this elevated role. And that is how it should be.

When there is an overview examination of this roster compared to prior years what is evident is that the organization has assembled two top quality lines. We didn't have that before. The lower lines are certainly important especially from the standpoint that at the minimum if they are not going to help you what you don't want them to do is hurt you. If the lower lines with their less time on the ice play to a standstill with the opposition then this team is better than the earlier teams.

What is sometimes forgotten with the energetic discussions regarding the line makeup is that lines are constantly being changed. Not only from game to game but also within the games. Line combinations are constantly being jumbled for a variety of reasons including individual player performances.

Brandon Biro up. Jack Quinn up.

This is for cap reasons, gets our cap hit as high as possible with a 23 man roster before placing Girgs on LTIR.

Biro and Quinn both have $925K cap hits, on the high side for ELCs.

Undrafted forward signed in March after he finished at Penn St.

I'm sorry, but there's a guy named Biro and he just happened to go to Penn St.?

Here’s the official announcement on taxi squad

Cozens going to be playing with the big boys.  I like the idea of giving him a guy like Skinner to play with rather then starting him on a typical Sabres third or fourth line usually comprising of all scrubs.

Smells like a favor?

No--not that--the guy who invented the ballpoint pen was named Biro and pens are called Biros in a lot of languages.

Not sure whether to take that as Okposo is out for sure, or Cozens is the placeholder. Affects my reaction.

Asplund is one I had not considered opening night, but this is the year he should make them team if he is going to be a player.

Pulling for him. Like his game a lot at the lower level. Hasn't looked yet like it will translate.

What in the actual *****

Trying to create a third scoring line (which we haven't had in forever) may just work pairing Skinner with Cozens.  But this?  What are those lines??

My reaction to this is that RK, who can coach D, has no idea how to put a forward line together unless it’s obvious.  His plan was to build a solid shutdown line.  Throwing Cozens into the role as a rookie in his first game makes no sense.

I’d prefer Cozens with Skinner, but in RK’s defense Asplund is a better choice then Sheahan.  If he truly hated Skinner putting him with Lazar and Sheahan would basically make Skinner useless.  At least Lazar can win a faceoff and Asplund has a history of being a reasonably skilled playmaker.

If I were building out this lineup with these player and KO out, I’d have done the following
Rieder Eakin Sheahan

Skinner Cozens Asplund

Jesus hell that bottom 6 is a travesty. What on earth would make you think Asplund and Skinner go together? Meth? The top 6 might work but that bottom 6 is more evidence of Kruegers warped philosophy of balance. Balance doesn't work if your defensive players are so piss poor offensively that your offensive player is on his own.

Expecting that Cozens is a placeholder for Okposo and that Asplund will be playing on the 4th line.

Will be interesting to see if that's what dresses tomorrow & also what they do the next night.  May be game 3 before cha ges are made (assuming all are healthy).

Swapping Asplund and Cozens makes sense on those two lines for checking vs. scoring. But Cozens could just be getting the placement because Okposo remains out and their style is more similar than Okposo/Asplund. Hopefully, Okposo is back for the opener, allowing Cozens to shift to the Skinner line, or even sit and observe.
