Kicking the can down the road again. I would of liked a 2 or 3 year deal but with the flat cap and whatnot; more flexibility cannot be a negative.

Well, fortunately/unfortunately, the can can't be kicked further. 2021 offseason will be a big one.

I would have paid more for two years, but that’s another brilliant deal in my opinion.

Sabres are going to have so many guys playing for a big contract this year and so much flexibility in who they re-sign and look to pick up next summer. Blank slate is the way to go in a flat cap world.

Also, Linus just paved the way for his replacement. $6.5 left to sign Olofsson, plus another $1 or more if they dump Hutton.

Going to have another $40 million in cap space next year to play with. Adams’ plan is obvious and he’s knocking it out of the park.

Man, next year's off season is going to have some real big decisions...

Love the AAV, wanted more than 1 year.

True, BUT if he wants to stay in Buffalo & they want him to stay by being a UFA he doesn't have to be protected from Seattle.  So, if they manage to work out a deal with him, they can protect the goalie they bring in this off-season and end up w/ Ullmark as well.

And if he doesn't want to be here, he won't be & nothing the Sabres can really do about it.  But if he doesn't want to be here, probably best to have him gone in a year if that is how the cookie crumbles.

With regards to the expansion draft, that scenario is a possibility but they would also need to bring in a goalie to expose.  They need to have at least one goalie exposed who meets the requirements.

This is what I see happening as well. Both Hutton and Ullmark go to market next off season cements my belief a trade of some magnitude is coming.

These lower numbers are because they are 1 year deals.  The players know that the  market is off because of the realities of the pandemic.  They are betting on themselves for next year and hoping the market resets itself.  I think VO will be one year at a lower number too and then they can look at their next moves: trade a dman, upgrade in net, circle back to Kahun possibly.

Well, he's setting up to get the HR pitch this coming off-season.  Remains to be seen whether he knocks it out of the park or whiffs & spins himself into the dirt.

The nice thing is comparing his 1st off-season to his 2 predecessors' 1st off-seasons, they're night and day.  Murray continued the tank to ensure McEichel & Botterill basically did nothing but bring in a rookie HC because he wanted to evaluate his squad its 1st year.   Adams has actually improved the roster on paper & managed the cap as well.

Presuming the rules are the same as the Vegas draft, and all reports indicate the rules will be the same, they have that.  His name is Johansson.  He's an RFA that the Sabres control the rights to.  Give him a QO and that box is checked.

Of course, but he won’t be defined by whether he re-signs any of these guys. Let them go if they want 2019 contracts. There will be talented replacements available that we won’t have to break the bank for.  Add a winning record to the appeal of Krueger and Eichel and plenty of players will want to be here.

He will be defined by how well he uses the space. Next off-season will be a lot like this one and cap space is the gold standard of flat cap NHL assets. Other teams will adjust but we have a head start. Leafs have just 13 Million in space next year. Lightning 11 before signing this year’s RFAs.

In addition to @Taro T’s point about Johansson, I think they can sign a cheap vet for this if needed.

@dudacek I think is 100% correct that KA is working this out intentionally and skillfully to have enough cap space to eat a few million in order to bring in a goalie upgrade now, as well as huge flexibility next offseason.

KA has IMHO already made more savvy moves in a few months as GM than JB did in 3 years.

Nice!  I was thinking that the goalies had an NHL games played threshold requirement.  I see that’s not the case though.  That’s good news.  Thanks

Seems like maybe little Kevy knows what he is doing out there.  They just grow up so fast.

Does anyone have a link to the first 6 months of JB’s tenure? That would be an interesting read. To contrast and compare what fans were saying the first 6 months of JB to what fans are saying of KA to this point.

No he won't be defined by any particular re-signing.  He'll be defined by how he builds off of what, hopefully, will be a successful 2020-'21 season.  We're in agreement there.

But was merely pointing out that while he's set himself up well for next off-season, he still needs to produce & with so many pieces not set there will be ample opportunity for things to go south.  But, based on what he's done to date, he gets the presumption that he'll be able to hit that meatball pitch.  Just because we expect it / hope for it; he still needs to hit it.

And, earlier, before I'd looked closer at the expansion draft rules was expecting they'd lose a goalie in that draft.  Now, courtesy of Ullmark being a UFA, that won't happen unless something really strange happens over the next 8 or so months.

Now, really not sure who they'll lose, but doubting it 3nds up their 4th best D nor their 8th best F.  Adams seems to be navigating the expansion draft masterfully.

JB brought in Pominville, Pouliot, and Griffith as opposed to Hall, Staal, and Eakin.  So, you know, almost the same thing.
