However, without the significant upgrades to 33% of the top 6 and finding themselves in the situation where the checking line finally isn't the clear 2nd best & 2nd most used line, he absolutely would've been noticeably missed. A big part of the reason those of us that found it important to keep Larsson believed that is he was far and away their 2nd most effective C. Losing Larsson meant the team HAD to bring in 2 C's from outside the organization. And, since 2015 the best C brought in was Johansson which really didn't reassure that a rookie GM would be able to do that. Thing is, Adams did manage to obtain 2 C's and added 1 other major piece to the top line. Which totally changed the landscape. The GM brought in Staal, Eakins and Hall and gave up only one player, Johansson. And to put a cherry on the Staal transaction it resulted in a net cap saving. And as you noted these few transactions resulted in not only in upgrading the roster but also reshaping and better balancing the roster. So instead of using more assets to address the 2C position and top one or two line forward spot we still have some remaining assets to parlay for other needs. With the exception of the surprising Hall signing the other moves were simply smart and well targeted deals. 2 Quote

Larsson was, is, and remains a very good defensive hockey player. If we don't notice his absence, it means Adams did a good job, not that Larsson didn't provide good value or that he was overrated. The Isles traded Tavares and got better. There are variables. 1 Quote

I mean so many teams are running different 1-3-1 plays. And our d would get caught chasing too often - cross ice pass and its an open net. They'd also occasionally just get it, fake the cross ice pass and fit it in shortside since ullmark struggles there. So... whatever you can do to kinda prevent open shots from the circles. Quote
