matter2003 Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 Sabres were in Montreal when the season got cancelled. If that game would have been played and the season cancelled the next day, it would have been to determine who made the playoffs... Kind of crazy when you think about it. Quote

PerreaultForever Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 and........if we had made it we'd what? be playing competitive playoff hockey with outstanding goaltending like them? I think not. Maybe we'd have won the lottery.........and yes, Jason would probably still be here. Maybe. Quote
thesportsbuff Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 as happy as I am to have Jason canned, i really don't have much faith that his successor will fair any better. i would have loved to have gotten a chance to see Jack Eichel carry this team through a playoff run, even in one of the stupidest playoff formats of all time. but, as far as the "if they played one more game thing", while true, i look no further than the 6 losses in a row prior to the washington game that ended up being the last game. 2 1 Quote
bob_sauve28 Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 It will make next seasons awesome run the Sabres go on seem that much better. Fix the goaltending situation, find a little more scoring, have everyone get a little better and fix the PP and away we go. Quote

Near the end of the abbreviated regular season the Sabres were on the fringe fighting for a playoff spot. During that crucial period of time they had a critical four game western trip. They earned zero points. Please, no more excuses or "what if" imaginary scenarios. They earned exactly what they got i.e. left out. 1 Quote

Yep. And as much as i would've loved having a chance to be in the playoffs & obviously I would've taken it, but in my heart of hearts there's no way i feel we deserved it.... stupid playoff format or not. DarthEbriate Posted August 15, 2020 Report Posted August 15, 2020 If Pittsburgh had been as disjointed against the Sabres as they were against the Habs, then maybe the Sabres would be enjoying some playtime with the Flyers. (Though I'd pick the Flyers in a series.) But let's not forget, the Habs had two 8-game losing streaks during the season, had sold off Kovalchuk and Scandella and whoever else at the deadline, and still had more points than the Sabres (2 in hand, sure) at the time the season was cut. The Sabres leadership had all the time in the world to get a Hutton replacement, or help when Olofsson got hurt (even in moving Skinner up), or to go get a rental 3C to play as 2C and did nothing. I won't lament what could have been in this instance; I save that for the times when the team had the potential of greatness. 1 Quote

The Sabres have been excellent/very good the past 2 October's and allegedly Hutton's vision issues are behind him. Would definitely liked to have seen guys like Eichel & Dahlin get experience in the win or go home format even without fans in the stands. And would've picked them to beat the Pens, too. Beating Pittsburgh would've guaranteed Botterill's return, true. But a loss to them & he'd've likely still been toast as he still wouldn't have been on board w/ the change in direction. Quote

I admire your optimism but there's absolutely no reason to think we would have beaten the Pens. Quote

He didn't look very good in that Montreal series for sure. No real magic and I don't think E-Rod even played did he? maybe JBot won that trade lol. 1 Quote

Didn’t we have a “future considerations” in our back pocket left over in a trade with them a while back. I wonder if that factored into the apparent “overpayment”? I often wonder if those ever factor in. Edited August 19, 2020 by SwampD Quote

Something along that line was my suspicion but it could've been as simple as the Pens thought that Sheary could work his old magic with Crosby and in Rodrigues they were getting a 13th F that could slot into nearly any role in the bottom 9 for a couple of games in case of an injury and that they figured their F prospect pool was deep enough that they won't really miss Kahun until possibly when they'd be at the point of having to replace both Crosby & Malkin.
