I remember one trip where on opening day of trout it was 25 degrees and 40MPH winds at noon. Fishing was great but was cold as heck.

My folks owned one of the islands, sold it in 2005. Spent my summers there growing up.  PS It's for sale again if you have a spare million:  They paid $18k for it in 1971

Ricketts Glen State Park in PA closes in the winter. But if you have proper ice climbing equipment you are allowed to do some rad stuff on the frozen waterfalls. Also it's pretty darn nice looking.

They close off the gorge trail In winter but it’s just a gate so we went around it. It gets pretty  icy down there so I wouldn’t recommend it. But the water level is much higher than the summer. So waterfalls that are just a trickle normally are raging. 

I’m gonna have to check out ricketts glen.

In ricketts the waterfalls freeze solid. It's a 7.2 mile loop and you can do legit ice climbing. The best time to go though is spring when they first open back up. All the run off has the waterfalls pumping.

BWCAW/Quetico -- even amidst a small forest fire. The bluffs of the Mississippi Valley in SE Minnesota. The night sky in central Australia. Avalanche Lake in Glacier NP. Sequoia NP. All things Mount Rainier.

And this little ditty: I was driving through foggy bands on 101 near the CA-OR border and I passed a trailhead. Doubled back. The fog was mostly burned off, but Damnation Creek (attached). (I'm a sucker for pretty much any combination of fog/mist/drizzle, ferns/mosses, and redwoods or other immense old growth.)

Lucky you!

It’s one thing to fly over those places. It’s another to be there in person.

As for the Rockies, I’ve driven by Aspen and Vail. TBT, I wasn’t all that impressed. Maybe I was put off by the deep pockets that live there.

I've been to 5 of those places.  They are great.  Never been to Europe.  But I did live in Las Vegas, so can I count the Paris and Monte Carlo casinos??  For that matter, can I count the Venetian casino as well??

My favorite place  is on I-70 in from Green River to Salina in Utah.  58 miles of absolutely nothing.  No gas stations or exits.  Just great desert scenery and solitude. There are signs that warn you that, "This the last exit for the next 58 miles."  Best have a good car, plenty of gas and a good bladder

RR 40 going into Colorado is the same... between Vernal Utah to Steamboat Springs Colorado...  ps Vernal Utah has one of the best Dinosaur museums I have been in...

I swam in a lagoon in Iceland a couple of years ago.  The lagoon was around 90 degrees F.  It is naturally geothermically heated.  The air was around 45 or 50 F.  It was pretty amazing.

I've been researching Madeira for some time.  Sounds like a stable government, great people, great weather, great beaches, great affordable healthcare, great golf, great food and wine..  If the next election doesn't go the way we prefer, my wife and I are seriously considering Madeira.  Ethnocentrism can be a limiting curse.
