I would think the picks would be based on how far teams make it in the playoffs, just like every year, then teams that lost in the first round would be based on who had the lowest points in the season for the best pick. Purely a guess, but expect only the 7 non-qualifiers to be in the lottery if it gets held before the expanded playoff tourney even starts. Would expect that everybody can move up to 1-3, but that team 31 (Detroit?, it's been so long, don't even remember nor care who else was where) has significantly increased odds of staying where they are. Expect the rest of the draft works similar to the existing format with teams either getting slotted in after the 1st 3 rounds are complete (maybe reseed it after each new playoff round to keep the Loafs from having a fairly poor draft slot even though Moe-ray-all embarrasses them in the opening round ;)) & then the Conference Finalists & SC Finalists get the last 4 picks. So, in your scenario, Buffalo picks 1st & the Habs pick 31st. ? 1 Quote
MakeSabresGrr8Again Posted May 25, 2020 Report Posted May 25, 2020 My other issue is that the Habs played 2 more games than we did. If we played those 2 games and won both, we would be in the playoffs instead. Not likely but anything can happen especially if it would screw us on draft position. Quote
Brawndo Posted May 25, 2020 Author Report Posted May 25, 2020 The Top 7 probably will get much better Lottery Odds. Quote

As I heard it, once the extra round is done, then all the teams not in the round of 16 are in the lottery with the normal odds. So Pittsburgh or Toronto could wind up with 1-2. Quote

And before anyone ask they could do the lottery before the play in by just assigning lottery spots to top 7 and then saying spot 8 is loser of this series #1, spot 9 is loser of series #2, etc. Quote

If they did that, anybody that thinks they have no realistic chance of winning it all that was a 3 seed or worse (presumably the ones in the "play-in" round) could cut bait quickly after their 1st game. 1/2 of them would only need to tank 2-3 more games to have top 11 odds. Doing that would be even more suspect than the decision to arbitrarily keep the bottom 2 Co ference seeds wildcards but not getting everybody up to the same # of games played. Sabres win their 2 games in hand & they're in the playoffs. Or if they go top 6 in a division, they're in. Either way, give us the MFin' Loafs. Quote

Has the NHL cancelled the rest of the regualr season? Is draft order based on the standings now? What is this nonsense that I am hearing about 24 teams and playoffs, or something? Quote

Personally, am disappointed that the Sabres got kept out. Will likely watch the playoffs, but fairly disinterestedly. Just can't work up the emotion to care at present. 1 Quote

That's the exact reason it drives me mad anytime I hear someone suggest that the draft lottery odds should be flipping, giving the greatest chance to the team with the best record. You'd see a whole new kind of tanking that is far worse for the so called integrity of the game, teams throwing in the towel on a playoff race. In a McDavid year, I'm sure there are plenty of teams who would rather have that 20% chance at him instead of the very last playoff spot. Blah blah blah, players won't try to lose. That doesn't matter. Management will find ways around that. 1 Quote
Brawndo Posted May 26, 2020 Author Report Posted May 26, 2020 Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) Tweeted: 5 minutes until Commissioner announcement on @Sportsnet. Most unique part will be explanation of the lottery. There is talk of it being “multi-faceted,” and allows for possibility it may need to be done on more than one occasion if one of the 8 play-in losers gets the pick. Quote
Taro T Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 So, the Sabres have a 6.5% chance of moving to the top slot & at least a 24.5% chance of moving down (not feeling like figuring out their odds of having a team behind them win the 2nd or 3rd draft if they don't win the 1st one, but that's the odds a nearly- playoff team gets the top pick). So, expect Buffalo to draft 8th. Yea us. <_< And for each pick that gets won by slots 8-15, the remaining 8 teams that nearly made the playoffs each have an equal chance of winning the supplemental lottery(lotteries). Quote
LabattBlue Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) Already said this in another thread, but this is BS. Either a team is in the lottery, or they are in the playoffs. You can’t be part of both. The NHL continues to be a 2nd rate league Edited May 26, 2020 by LabattBlue 3 Quote

Odds for the 8 teams that make the "playoffs" are the same as last year, they just can't win #1? Quote
