TV was the pinnacle, right? But when it came to bedtime, there was no TV. It was the late 1970s and early 1980s, and televisions in bedrooms were a luxury for parents. We kids didn't have them (unless we were really really sick, like chicken pox or something, in which case the portable B&W came in). But radios were ok, so I grew up with Jeanneret. Well, until Mom came in shut off the radio and took the earphone out. True story: I thought the Bruins had a player named "Dork." This was the same for me in the 90s. Jeanneret on my walkman, trying to stay awake to hear the end of the game. I distinctly remember the series against Ottawa in 97. Effing Ron Tugnutt. 1 Quote

Pegs should just write a monster check to Chris Cuthbert and be done with it. Pegs doesn't care about having a good play by play guy. He cares about having good, fine, young men, Pegula People, representing him. He would have never hired a young, wild and woolly Jeanneret, who smoked, drank and spoke of jock straps on the air. He was actually good in that role. RJ should have retired several years ago. He's nothing close to what he was. I'm not looking forward to the Dan Dunleavy era, which might very well last a long time. I can see RJ trying to get it to 50 years and then saying "that's enough." 3 Quote

Pimlach Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) My opinion is that Darling in his prime was a better play by play man, with a smoother voice, than RJ. If you are not from Buffalo, RJ is an acquired taste. He is a real HOF guy, no doubt, but his ability to be a character, and say classic things, is what makes him great. Dan Kelly, the former voice of the St Louis Blues, was the voice of the NHL in the early expansion days - when they Went to 12 teams and played national TV games every Sunday afternoon (after football ended which was much earlier than it does now). Kelly was excellent and so is his son, who happens to be the voice of the Blues today. Very smooth tempo and he knows the game and paints a picture of it. Another thing Kelly does, he knows and announces the opposing teams players by name as easily as his Blues. Something RJ is slipping at in his advanced age. All I know for sure is that I will miss RJ when he finally steps down. It’s a shame he never got to call a Cup victory. Edited April 12, 2020 by Pimlach 3 Quote
Marvin Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 I have the Winter 1996 copy of Hockey Stars magazine that named RJ as one of the best things in the NHL: [...] Hands down, Jeanneret is the best play-by-play man in the NHL -- and he's so far ahead of the rest that there's no second best. He can make a boring game sound exciting and an exciting game sound like a life-or-death struggle. [...] 1 2 Quote

Sylvia Kristel was 'meh' as far as soft core porno queens rate when she was in her prime. By the time she was the old geezer having flashbacks in the '90's, why even bother? And 11 is evil for turning this tangent about how awful & short lived Gurtler's tenure was into a further tangent about whether Sylvia Kristel became Stacy's Mom. (Btw, she didn't. ? ) Quote
