I'll start by saying that social media has done much more damage than good in the world, it's certainly not helping in this particular case.

Medically speaking, I don't think we have enough info as of yet, but I do belive it's getting blown up more than it needs to be. Sure it's a bad virus, but if they named it influenza C and didn't report every single death on television, I think we would be looking at a much different situation.

The mass hysteria to this is what I am honestly having a hard time dealing with, I would take an educated guess that 20% of the population has already had this and are immune to it. But alas, here we are dealing with a "pandemic" and "crisis"

I wish I could quarantine myself until people calm the f down

Thank you, exactly my point.

That's part of the problem.  This would be easy to control if everyone who caught it quickly turned purple with green polkadots.  Because so many are (relatively) asymptomatic "carriers" instead, there's a greater risk of them of unknowingly infecting others, eventually reaching the ones who aren't in the "Most of us" population.  They're asking the healthy "sheep" to be "on the run," not because it will directly affect their lives in a significant way to get it, but rather to slow down how quickly the unhealthy ones come down with it.  Too many, too fast would exceed the healthcare systems' capacity to treat them.

Yea but that is not really the point, it is whats going on in the world with this hysteria, its like were all getting Ebola.

Between 250.000 and 650.000 people die each year in flue, 6501 people have died from covid19 for now since december 31th, ye that sucks but it is what it is, people also die in cancer and we cant do ***** about it, yet.
Same with covid, since there is no vaccine.

We should have focused on containing old people and people with bad immunesystem, not containing the whole fkn world cuz imo that just gonna prolong this issue.
There are so many sensitive people in this world, a sneeze and they demand to see a doctor, the doctor that also has to handle all other illness and ***** that happends.

I f-king hate media for what they are doing now, only talking about death and destruction, instead of trying to TEACH people and calm the ***** down.

There is alot that matters with this issue and world wide spread, i get that, but how we handle this now is just wrong imo.

When Dr. Fauci says that hundreds of thousands of Americans could die, what is the proper amount of attention the media should put on the story? IMHO, the media (what is "the media" anyway?) have done an incredible public service in their attempts to educate people and provide information. Every channel is chock full of reputable experts. Q&A's. Town Halls. Reams and reams of coverage in print media. They're doing their job. It's amazing anyone could be following this story and think it's just the flu.

I've heard any number of epidemiologists say they just don't know if getting Covid 19 confers any immunity. Many unknowns. But enough is clearly known that calling it Influenza C is not right.

One's perspective here is key. Young, healthy, almost by definition self-centered people tend to not see the danger or think about society at large (I probably didn't either at 18 or 21). Early 50s, two underlying lung diseases, on immunosuppressive drugs, work in a nursing home/assisted living? It gets your attention.

Welp. Looks like I’m taking my cue from Woody and not PA.

It bothers the ***** out of me when experts say what “could” happen, and then people take it as what would happen. This “pandemic” was created by just that. People latching on to the worst case scenarios.

8 cases in hospital last nite that I work at. 3 docs out at hospital my wife works at.  We were theorizing that we may have all had it at work in early january with an unknown virus... some got tested for the flu but were negative... hmmm

It most likely been going around much longer, thing is that  countries like South-Korea that had to deal with SARS have a good supply of test kits.   Something the West is severely lacking in.

If you want to take the advice of a hot, jumpin', world-traveling, humanitarian physician over me, fine. We are done, bro.

I’m not saying you are wrong, but how could this be possible?

If a human contracts a virus and then recovers, that means that their body produced antibodies to fight it off and destroy it.  Those antibodies remain around for a certain amount of time.  That person would be resistant to the same virus, if not immune.

NY and a few other states shutting down gyms, restaurants, and casinos, along with any gathering over 50 people

Yep. That's the end of my aerial studio. Financially we won't survive this. Just one of many business casualties. But if it saves lives, worth it.

But if your gym or favorite place has memberships or merch or anything, consider tossing some bucks their way, or vocal support. A local outcry of love might make the difference to an owner's livelihood.

My wife was telling me about a guy that was flying into Nashville, where we live. He told one of the stewardesses he had the Corona virus, jokingly he said later. Passengers were delayed eight hours, he was arrested and permanently banned from that airline. What a jerk.

I go home tomorrow. Still don't know if I should be worried about flying and should drive back. Can't decide

I don't have a clue. I'm just passing along what I heard.

There's this: "Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday it’s likely the case that someone who gets infected once is immune." The word likely is noteworthy there.

Inundating the health care system would most likely lead to much bigger issues.

For example: The county I live in has 2 million people and 362 ICU beds.  If half the people are sick simultaneously and 5% of them require ICU, that's 50,000 ICU beds needed. And that doesn't include the surrounding rural counties that don't have their own ICUs.

I would think that any responsible Dr would say “probably” in that instance.  Because, while it reasons that they should be “immune”, the research has not been done to scientifically prove it.

There’s no reason to believe this virus will not lead to immunity, at least temporarily. In fact, Eli Lily is teaming up with a small biotech company (these evil drug companies!!) to reverse engineer naturally produced anti-Covid antibodies.

The way they are doing it is extremely cool. They received a vial of blood from one of the first patients in the US to recover. They then sequenced the immunoglobulin regions of each B cell to see what antibodies they were making. They have about 500 candidates to test for in vitro viral neutralization. This antibody(ies) will then be mass produced. This will be a form of “passive” immunity.

Traditional media and social media are contributing to the hysteria, no doubt about it.  But....these measures that are being put in place are very much prudent and necessary.  Unfortunately, when these types of unprecedented measures are put into action in a world drenched in 24/7 media coverage and rampant social media misinformation you end up getting what we are now witnessing with the hoarding and general hysteria.

As a population this is a very big problem.  I'm not scared for myself or my family because I know the risk is low if any of us were to become infected, but the right thing to do and the altruistic thing to do for society as a whole is to follow these guidelines as best as we can on a population scale, preferably without the run on grocery stores and pharmacies.  If we end up seeing what is happening in Italy here in this country, rationing of patient care because there isn't enough healthcare infrastructure to properly treat all those who truly need it, then we ain't seen nothing yet in terms of mass panic.  That could still happen..or it might not.  Nobody knows, but erring on the side of caution with the current measures is unquestionably the right thing to do at this point.

Just like some of the vaccines that are in trials this sounds promising, but will likely have no effect on this current outbreak.  Identifying the best neutralizing IgG's, testing them for efficacy and then scaling up even if done at light speed on a pharmaceutical development scale with lifting of normal regulations will take months.

I think a more likely current intervention that I first read about weeks ago, but have heard more of the TV MD's mentioning recently is to recover plasma (and the antibodies therein) from recovered covid19 patients and giving it to the sick and most vulnerable as a form of passive immunization.

And let's face it, we have a good number of people around here who already question the practice of vaccination.  Can you imagine their reaction if one gets fast tracked without the normal regulation?  I suppose there's always going to be the people who will find conspiracy in anything (just read this thread), so that will just be one more thing that some jump on.

It's just subconsciously reinforcing the importance of social distancing. We're all on our own little isles for the moment. And at least we have something with carbs... wait, not the light stuff!
