Great Asset Management Botterill

@GASabresIUFAN, @Curt @LTS and everyone else who was arguing with me about squandering our blueline assets.

@Brawndo and Marc Bergevin have explained it a helluvalot better than I did.

This thread gonna get a lot of action

I'm sure JBot has that Frolik to Edmonton for a 2nd trade incoming to shut us all up.

Any minute now.

If Pegula wants continuity with organization because of Krueger, just promote Steve Greeley to the GM Job.

He was offered the GM Job in Carolina, but turned it down because it would be a pay cut.

Give him the offseason that Botterill was going to get to turn it around.

Enough of this BS

Every GM in the land has to be on the phone with JBot at this point looking for a great deal.

Edit: But now at the deadline, a guy like Marco is really valuable for a playoff roster. And retaining salary to toss in the conditional 4th (or bump a 3rd up to a 2nd)? Well played.

A source of mine told me (months ago) that JBot is perceived by other front offices around the league as "in self-preservation mode;" looks like other GM's are just going to have their way with him.

JBot needs a reference chart for the remaining assets if he's going to sell. Rule 1: A proven NHL-caliber UFA rental at the trade deadline is a 2nd and then start adding more as player's skill increases or is considered more vital to the new team. McCabe, Larsson, Vesey, even Sheary, they're all 2nds minimum from here on out.

Montreal retained 50% of his salary.

For the remainder of the year?   Definitely worth a #2 for that.

Scandy was having a fine year and played well with Joker.    He is most definitely a better asset longer term that Frolik.

We really needed a forward with all the injuries we had at the time but this is one more reason to question Boterill.

Can you send him an email on this?  He is kind of new to this GM stuff.

I'll record a hologram.

But yes, we can call it the Boyes rule. Or the Raffi Torres rule. A guy you're going to plug into your playoff roster gets at least a 2.

want to fix the title?  2nd round pick was for the 2 million in cap retention at the deadline

for comparison-- toronto paid a 1st round pick for 6 million pre-season (bought out)

What is this based on?

that's literally the difference in the closest comparable (literal previous trade)

when cross-checked with what other teams paid just for cap, it also fits

Apples and oranges IMHO.

And while Scandy's salary is $4MM, Montreal isn't retaining a $2MM cap hit -- they are only retaining the prorated portion through the end of the year.  STL has 23 games remaining, which is 28% of the schedule.  28% of Scandy's $4MM salary is $1.12MM.  Montreal retained half of that, which is $556K.

Any respectable GM would have retained that much to get a #2 instead of a #4 for Scandy.  JB just mis-timed the market and mis-evaluated how much Scandy would yield in trade.

He screwed it up.
