Chris Johnson mentioned on SN 590 that the Rangers are the leaders for Erik Karlsson with Tampa being in 2nd. 

Tampa would have to clear mega cap space to do so.

How do the decide “leaders” when they don’t know who is preparing offers, what the market might be, or what Karlsson wants?

Yes it is.

Friedman mentioned on a podcast that even though this is tampering there is behind the scene contact between teams and agents to gauge interest going on all the time.

It is because its NYC, they think they are top of everyone's list,  but look how the Knicks are doing lately attracting FAs.. not buying the rumor and doubt Karlsson is either, who know with Panarin, but gotta believe FLA is more probable given past rumors.

With Mike Hoffman in Florida, I don't really think Karlsson is dying to go there.

The smile on his face post game the other night and how he seems to be fitting in with that team.  Seemed like he was not one of the guys earlier in the season... hired gun type... now looks like he has settled in to one of team leaders... just a gut.

If a GM said something on the radio, yes...but it was a reporter, so it's not tampering.

If Botterill says, "we want Erik Karlsson and are prepared to make him a big offer," that's tampering...but if Paul Hamilton says it, it's not tampering.

Joe Smith the Athletic Writer for Tampa was speaking of The Lightning needing to trade Ryan Callahan and that he might be a fit for the Sabres. He has one year left at 5.8 Million and John Vogl Speculated he might provide some leadership to The locker room.

Callahan grew up an hour away from Buffalo and played junior hockey in the city, so it makes sense for the Sabres to be on his trade list. The question is who would accompany him.

Buffalo’s organizational depth chart at left and right wing borders on pitiful, so the Sabres could use some of the Bolts’ depth. Youngsters Alexander Volkov, Carter Verhaeghe, Alex Barre-Boulet and Taylor Raddysh all shined for Syracuse in the AHL. They could easily push for jobs in Buffalo or lead top lines in Rochester, which is set to lose numerous UFAs. GMs Jason Botterill and Julien BriseBois could figure out which one should join Callahan in exchange for a pick or two.

If the GMs want to work out a blockbuster, the Sabres have a piece to make that work. Right-handed defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen seems to have plateaued as a second-pair guy, which isn’t bad but also isn’t what the Sabres envisioned. The 24-year-old averages seven goals and 31 assists per season, which would fit in nicely with the Lightning.

The return would have to be substantial — significantly more than Callahan and one AHL prospect. In addition to scoring wingers, the Sabres need a second-line center.

Buffalo has room to haggle. It also has room for Callahan.

This doesn’t get them the cap relief they are looking for.

You’d have to switch out Cirelli for Miller.

Absolutely not. I think we need to go bigger. 

Risto, Nylander, the 2nd 2019 1st for Cirelli, Miller, Foote, Callahan and Stephens.

We take the cap dump that is Callahan. Get 2 potential 2nd line or 3rd line center or winger options, add back a RHD. We give them a known RHD, a replacement AHL player that has potential much like Stephens or Cirelli, and we toss in a 2019 30th overall pick to sweeten the pot and because Tampa doesn't have a 2nd rounder anyways. This clears 11.778mil in cap for Tampa. Now add back in Risto and that still clears... 6.378mil in additional cap space for the Lightning. 

This are not actual equal too but more of a rough this is how it works out. I don't think that exactly match. 

Risto + 1st = Miller, Cirelli, Foote

Nylander = Stephens

Capspace = Callahan.

If I am trading with Tampa it is with the understanding that I may be helping an in division rival for the next few years and I am looking for a better return for the three to five year window.  That being said I don't give them cap relief with Callahan but look for Tampa to buy him out and then Buffalo could sign him for a cheap one year 1 million dollar deal if they want his leadership. If you want Okposo as your 3rd line RW then Callahan slots in on the fourth line RW.  I see this more of a probability then him being added to a trade.  

Tampa would still need cap relief and still would look to their younger players in exchange for Risto.

I would still look to trade Risto out west, either Vancouver or Edmonton, but if I am looking at Tampa the deal would be...

Risto, Thompson, and 2021 2nd rd pick for Miller, Killorn, and Foote.

I always thought at the trade deadline a foundation was laid for a Risto to tampa trade.

I'm not a fan of miller, if we have to add him then so be it, but that is why you can ask for more pieces I suppose.
