I 100% blame botterill because he should have refused to make the trade.

Very easy to say that from the sidelines.  Not nearly as easy when you actually have the GM position and the owner is adamant that he goes & goes prior to the monster bonus getting paid out.  (Which is speculation on our part, but very plausible.)

When you couple that with a belief in his own abilities to craft a backup plan (a belief that certainly appears misguided at present) to mitigate the damage that losing O'Reilly would cause; there's no way he's realistically going to fall on his sword and quit over that 1 move.  (Much to all our chagrin,)

Can we stop talking about O'Reilly trade after 2 freaking years.   No one on here has any clue how to fix this team seeing we keep talking about a trade that went bad for us.  Personally I appreciate more ideas on how to correct the current squad.   But lets keep harping about the O'Reilly trade instead.

As soon as that slot has been adequately filled, the discussion will FINALLY die down, though it won't fully go away.  (See Drury/Briere or No Goal as reference.  ? )

Ironically, IF Cozens ends up not just a 2C but 1C quality (not even remotely a lock, and don't even believe speculation of that nature has been in the conversation), but IF he does, that 'trade of which we shall not speak' could actually work out as Cozens will have his window of peak performance aligned much better with Dahlin's that that 'other guy' would've.  (And no, wouldn't put even a $ down on that bet happening.  But it isn't ENTIRELY out of the question. ? )

What would be really ironic would be if Cozens eclipses Jack to become the 1C and Jack loses his passion for the game and demands a trade.

You do realize that you just took an implausible but fun premise like "Ghostbusters" and took it to the all female remake of "Ghostbusters," right?

What about not resigning Drury and Briere?!

Quote

Jimmy Vesey, winger: Vesey is arguably the most intriguing name on this list. He has proven to be an above-average left wing for Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart, and Vesey provides the Sabres with a steady presence at 5 on 5. Though Vesey has only nine goals with 10 assists and a plus-13 rating in 56 games, he's been stricken with some bad puck luck and has been one of the Sabres' more consistent forwards at even strength since his 20-game goal drought to start the season.

Vesey, on paper, is a player the Sabres may want to consider re-signing, but he probably hasn't produced enough without Eichel or Reinhart to justify a multi-year commitment. There's also the question of whether Vesey would be interested in returning. He did not want to play in Buffalo after his rights were acquired by the team in 2016, and he didn't choose to play for the Sabres when he was traded to them in July.

Botterill has an opportunity to recoup the third-round pick he traded to the New York Rangers to acquire Vesey.

Zemgus Girgensons, winger: Girgensons is the sort of throwback, fourth-line player contenders search for for this time of year. He can kill penalties and forces opponents into mistakes on the forecheck. Girgensons also has enough skill to be a threat with the puck.

The 26-year-old's 10 goals this season are his most since he scored 15 in 2014-15. He would cost a contender around $387,097 against the salary cap and probably a mid-round draft pick.

What a poorly worded article. Lol above average left wing... bahahaha. Sure buffalo news.

Production-wise in the past few years:

Better than Moulson (the really bad season), Foligno, Ennis (at the end), Nylander, Deslauriers, Wilson, and Asplund. Worse than Kane, Skinner, Olofsson, and Girgensons. That's... better than average... in Buffalo?

they do set the bar quite low in the local press don't they?

Journalism has taken a real nosedive in the last 15, 20 years. Ethics and integrity have pretty much gone by by what with fake news , biased paid for articles, the internet, clickbait, and news outlets using stories to divide people along racial, religious, political or cultural lines. Immho.

If TP didn’t want to pay the bonus which is probably true, then what was Jbot supposed to do?

I went back and looked at the trade reviews at the time.  While Jbot looks like he made a bad deal now, the talking heads thought he did pretty well then.  Here is one example. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportingnews.com/us/amp/nhl/news/ryan-oreilly-trade-grades-details-sabres-blues-draft-picks-patrik-berglund/jb179og12xvh1dttn0s5c9g1i

This is what LeBrun called the trade on Twitter at the time.

1st 2019. 2nd 2021. Tage Thompson. Sobotka. Berglund. That is a major return for the Sabres. I get why the Blues did it, they add ROR and Bozak today and they're a better team. But given the midnight pressure to deal ROR, impressive by Jason Botterill

who cares what others said at the time? It was and still is one of the worst trades ever for Sabres

Trade for Cirelli. Cut Hutton. Leave mittelstadt in the AHL another year.

Start cozens at wing but make him take faceoffs and on home ice give him center shifts.

Re-sign Larsson.

Go to playoffs, wreck people's *****.

Cirelli seems more like a dream to me and doubt they trade him in the division.

Any interest in Ott's Chris Tierney for 2C?  RFA 25 years old.  51-52% in the faceoff circle.  10g 20a for 30 pts ytd (62 games). Basically on pace for another 40 pt season.

in 2017-18 (SJ) 17g 23a 40pts; in 2018-19 (Ott) 9g 39a 48pts.

Originally drafted in 2012 2nd rd 55th overall.

Next contract? 3 year 13 mill?

Would you swap Montour for him?

TSN's Trade bait list includes the following centers and RW

C - Pageau (UFA), Haula (UFA), Jost (RFA), Trocheck (2 years left), Goodrow (1 year), Kerfoot (3 years), Tierney (RFA), Andersson (1 year)

RW - Fast (UFA), Palmieri (1 year left), Kapanen (2 years), Buchnevich (1 year), Grimaldi (UFA),
