Dahlin has a meh shot. Does that make you worried about him going forward as a top defender? Will it hinder his effectiveness and how much?

I don't worry a lot and hope he works on it.

^ It’s already improved since year one. These things take time. Eichel himself only had a max 28 goals until presumably this season. He’ll improve his accuracy with repetition.

His shot, lack of top end speed and decision making give me a significant amount of trepidation anointing him anything other than "Former 1st overall pick".  I recognize how good he is and how he tilts the ice but not being decisively better at something than everyone else on the ice with him is troublesome.

After his 1st season he said that he was gonna work a lot on his one timers, since he admitted he hadn't really done that in his career up to that point but saw how important of a skill/shot that was to have.

He still needs to work on it & i think in time his shot will improve. Once he adds more weight & size to his frame & grows more into a man than a teenager, i expect he'll grow in all areas. Both literally & figuratively. I think we just need to be patient. Comparisons like Lidstrom were getting thrown around before he ever stepped on the ice. Its gonna take time for him to get there.

But his shot doesnt concern me. His giveaways concerned me a bit but i expect that'll improve in time as well. If theres anything i'd like to see it'd be for him to be more assertive with his game. But that'll come with more confidence out there.

Agree, and people may forget that Lidstrom himself was 21 before he even stepped on NHL ice.  We never even saw him try to play at the highest level as a teen.  It takes time.

Didn't Gionta and his surgically repaired arms and his "old man muscles" win our hardest shot skills competition just a few years back?

So my answer is nope. Dahlin isn't even 20 yet. He has 5 years to work on his shot and it'll be very much improved by then. More importantly is getting stronger in his own zone, making snappy passes on the PP, preventing short-handed breakaways, and working on the all-around game.

No.  I don't worry about his shot.  TIo worry about his level of compete if he ends up playing on a losing team for a long time.

At the risk of mis-speaking for PA, I'm pretty sure this is where his complaint (if you can call it that) lies.  Way premature, and spoken with such conviction.  Hopefully we'll see it at some point, but he has a long ways to go to be spoken of with the top handful of defensemen currently in the league, let alone an arguably GOAT.  I think his point is valid.

I'm not at a point of concern that he's destined to me "former 1st overall pick", but I also think his current prowess in his own end is overstated, as is his current ability to tilt the ice.  Right now I see him as an OK defenseman and powerplay specialist.  Good descriptions for a 19 yr old kid, but I think his current game is more over-hyped than his potential.  Fortunately, he's early in the development cycle.

Valid.  He's not showing young Crosby compete for sure.  Then again, Crosby's a first ballot HOF guaranteed.  Rare stuff that only maybe 1 pick each decade has.  It's no crime if Dahlin never gets to that level of compete.  But it's what the Sabres need so it's not unusual that it might get brought up.

Funny you mention Crosby, because was just about to ask how concerning was Crosby's lack of prowess in the faceoff circle when he came into the league?

Kid will develop a shot.

He's what 18 years old maybe just 19? Not sure. I'm not all that concerned yet. Sure media had him an instant Bobby Orr but you know how that usually goes.
