I thought this idea was absolutely idiotic not so long ago but I think the time is just about right.  It answers your secondary scoring immediately. It gives your fanbase something to carry the day.  It may also totally blow up in your face and be a disaster. Let's discuss.

No thanks. I don’t want him. He can stay in Chicago. Just because his mommy pushed him out in this geographical location, doesn’t make me want him any more. I know that’s weirdly important to some hockey fans. And I’m this hypothetical, Chicago would want a ton for him. Like more than what’s listed.

If the draft picks in the first package were three 1sts, you don't think they would do it?

meh. Perhaps. I’d think they’d want a significant piece too. Like Skinner with 25-30% retained. And Risto. And to unload a cap dump on us. That’s the kind of major grab they’d be looking for IMO. Kane is Chicago’s Crosby. It would take a mountain to move him.

As with any proposed trade, it depends on the price.  Expect pretty much the minimum that the Hawks would settle for would be more than this team can afford to give up.  So, probably wouldn't pull the trigger, but would definitely make an offer.

Kane used to live here you know. He’s going to die here. Convenient.
The troublesome part is Chicago just traded Joker for Nylander. They’re happy on defense - bunch of good young players. They’d want a scoring forward as their main prospect in return and our only blue chip is Cozens.

I don't make this move all all unless it was a super basement bargain price.  (Which means other teams will make it before the Sabres).

Why?  This team has bigger problems than a lot of us want to think. Kane on this team (especially if you have to trade functioning parts from the current roster) isn't going to make it THAT Much better.  You are not going to become a yearly contender to move deep in the playoffs with him.  You aren't going to add him to this team and win a cup.

So, Whats the point?  If adding him is a temporary fix..to win a few more games and MAYBE make the playoffs but not even be considered a top contender, I don't want that.

I get we ALL are sick of not making the playoffs. We all are sick of having a below average team at best. But that is the issue.  They screwed up the tank (at least the results), I get it...but that doesn't mean to start taking shortcuts again. Do what you need to do to get this team to be a top-10 team year after year after year.  If that means taking a chance on hitting on ANOTHER top 10 pick, so be it. The last thing I want is band-aids where 5 years from now the team is in the same spot with MAYBE a playoff appearance and not much to look forward to in the future.

I know at one time he talked of coming home at the end and expressed concern if he still could during his last legal entanglement.

I also have heard rumblings of him and Eichel not getting along.

That being said, hell yeah, when Chicago is ready to deal him for a reasonable package, he is one of those unique players who will continue to excel into his late thirties.

Kane will turn 32 at the beginning of next season.

He's under contract at a $10.5MM  cap hit for 3 more years after this one.

He's not going to come cheap -- so forget about Bogo and a 2nd-rounder.

At a minimum, it will cost the Sabres' 2020 1st-rounder plus either Reino or Risto plus something like Mitts or Borgen.

If I were JB, and I could get Kane today for that price, I would probably pull the trigger.

(Which is another reason to have a hockey czar -- so JB has an experienced and smart hockey guy in the room to discuss major decisions with.)

If that's the price, they'll bring back Mrs. O'Leary's cow and burn it down again.

Looking at Chicago's cap... They have $11M coming off the books just in goalies this offseason. Get a 4M goalie and a ELC backup and they're on the path to cap sanity. Their bad contract is Seabrook. Kane is still very effective and they don't need to move him. So they can ask for the moon.

I'm going back to my stance from years back (or at least the last time Kane was mentioned). He can have a homecoming after his current contract expires and he is wiling to do a 2 year/6 M hometown discount as a 3rd liner / PP specialist.

We need a center more, but he does drive offense.  Imho, only Eichel, VO, Dahlin, Joker, Cozens and maybe Samson, should be off table.  After that everyone is fair game.

If Reinhart is the price to get Kane I’d fly to Buffalo and drive Reinhart to the airport myself. I like Sam.

Chicago is going to have to rebuild at some point soon.  Not sure the Sabres have what it takes to get it done but I'd love to see them take a stab at it.

Not willing to give up the farm for him but if can unload some equal salary and get the right deal he might be great to have.

We would still need a 2C and a power forward presence in the top 6 so i doubt that getting Kane alone makes us better for the long haul

The Buffalo Sabres do not need a 40 goal scorer.

This is an automated, archived message.

There’s just no place for a 40 goal scorer on the Sabres.

No, they don't. Teams should get to the rebuild point that gets talked about, but they never do, even after they have obviously aged out of contention.

That sounds better. It was Kovalchuk, right?

It was any goal scorer that fans tried to convince themselves we didn’t need because it would have “mortgaged the future”,... as if they had one.

I certainly carried the anti Kovi flag proud and high.  He was a POS, is a POS and will always be a POS.  Now Patty Kane is a different kind of POS but I wouldn't quesiton his on ice actions the way Kovalchuk's should be.  Not only does he completely bail on his team at the drop of a hat, he also only tries when he feels like it providing an even worse position than just be a deserter.

Kovalchuk was the origin of the Sabrespace lore.

I'm uncertain what you mean here.  Are you saying teams don't but should or are you saying teams don't need to if they are built correctly?

I'm saying teams should but don't. LA and Chicago are the two current prominent examples, but they're hardly alone in the annals of history.
