Tondas Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 Last year, NHL.TV was virtually flawless with it's feed. This year, the feed is stuttering, especially as the game wears on. It's maddening. Is anyone else experiencing problems with their NHL.TV feed? BTW, I use the NHL app on a Samsung phone and cast it to the TV. Quote
miles Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 I use chrome on my laptop and have had no issues. Quote
dudacek Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 Apple TV is four for four for me. No issues at all. Quote
SwampD Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 No issues. I think it actually looks better on the Roku express than on the Apple TV. Quote

skaught Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 (edited) No issues here, it's been so much better now that they stopped using flash. I usually watch in Chrome or NHL.tv app on my PS4. Edited October 10, 2019 by skaught Quote
Derrico Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 Looks great on my Roku when it's not blacked out! Quote

Or if your TV can be cast to, does it have smart TV capabilities? Can you load the NHL app right on the TV? Edited October 10, 2019 by Doohickie 1 Quote

The NHL app seems to perform better when I watch on my iPad but as soon as I project it starts to lag. Quote
steveoath Posted October 10, 2019 Report Posted October 10, 2019 3 of the the first 4 games have been blacked out here. But on Amazon fire TV I'm experiencing the audio and picture not being in sync, whereas any other app is fine. Quote

msw2112 Posted October 12, 2019 Report Posted October 12, 2019 I have never used NHL.TV or other streaming services for sports. I live in the West, so the games are usually half over by the time I get home from work. Is it possible to start streaming the game from the beginning while the game is already in progress? In other words, if I get home 2 hours into the game, can I start streaming from the beginning (and without the app showing me the current score)? Also, can you pause and resume the feed while you are watching? Just evaluating whether to give this option a try versus going with Center Ice (on Directv). Thanks! Quote

Yes you can get spoiler free start from beginning of game while game is in progress. Pause when you want. Only complaint is the skip button on roku is only 10sec increments. 17 minutes takes a few clicks. Edited October 12, 2019 by triumph_communes 1 Quote

Tondas Posted October 30, 2019 Author Report Posted October 30, 2019 (edited) Did all the above stuff. Still not good. It's weird. I use the app on an android and cast to TV. The feed is acceptable in the first 2 periods (buffer stops only 3 -5 times), but in the 3rd period, it buffers almost every 15 seconds. The buffering lasts only about 3-5 seconds but really makes me want to poke my eyes with a pointed stick. Not sure why for 2 periods it's OK, and then like clockwork, the 3rd period is terrible. IKnowPhysics Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 NHL.tv, which is usually ok, was a real piece of ***** last night. Logged on successfully and casted to TV from phone ok, but then it started stuttering constantly. Logged off phone, switched to laptop on the same wifi, and got the multiple locations error. Logged off and shut off laptop and phone several times to no avail. Tried a 2nd phone, no worky. Tried a 2nd laptop, same issue. Then after a while, it randomly started working on the 2nd laptop. But a new issue started where the game video just stops, and the in-browser controls refuse to appear, so you have to refresh the page to regain control and then scroll to the part where you left off. Except this new issue occurred about every four minutes. It took me about two hours to watch the first period. So then I just watched the game recap video, which also took me about twenty minutes to watch five minutes of video because of the same issues on the NHL's piece of ***** website. Quote

What casting device are you using on the TV? My understanding is that when you cast something to the TV, the TV’s Internet browser simply goes to the URL that the originating casting device directs it to (ie you are not transmitting from your phone or tablet to the TV, you are simply telling the TV where on the internet to look). Accordingly, if the casting device on the TV (or the TVs built-in browser) is crappy, that could be your issue. Quote

Same phone, WIFI, Chromecast device and TV as last year when it worked perfectly. Did most of you guys purchase the Sabres only package? I got the full NHL package. While I did the same last year, maybe that's something that's clogging the pipe. And it's not only Sabres games that stutter, it's every game for every team. More than frustrated. P.S. I have NFL Sunday Ticket "Streaming Service Only" to watch the Bills, and using the same set up and equipment, that stream works flawlessly. Edited October 30, 2019 by Tondas Quote

This is correct, for most Cast type models (Chromecast from an app, etc.) your user device (phone, browser) just tells the cast software in the TV/stick what to do. If you're running a duplicate screen via HDMI, Cast Screen, or some wireless screen protocol, your user device is doing the work and just displaying on the TV. 6 hours ago, Tondas said: ChromeCast to TV. Full vs. Sabres shouldn't matter, they're not streaming all the games to you at once. I think think of a few things that may be affecting things, such as some other wifi in your area popped up since then (your neighbor's new super-high-power wifi interfering with things, air traffic control[0], etc.), or the NHL package upped the bitrate on the feed and your internet/wifi/device can't keep up. For intance, maybe the NHL is streaming 60fps or 1080p now and wasn't before. I'd try eliminating pieces to see if you can narrow it down: Try watching on a computer wired to your router (eliminates wifi, casting issues) Try watching on (hopefully the same) computer over wifi (eliminates casting issues) Check if being close or far to the router matters Try a recorded game vs. live (I seem to remember the recorded games working better, probably because they're not trying to keep the feed so close to real time) If there are options for the stream quality, try reducing things. [0] IIRC, some airport systems are next to the 2.4GHz wifi frequency bands so there can be interference. 1 Quote
Derrico Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 NHL.tv has been great in terms of quality for me but I’m watching through Roku. I also have full package and even turned a couple games on last night to check the scores and they were working fine. Streaming nfl games via DAZN (only Paid nfl streaming service in Canada that I’m aware of) is absolute dog ***** though. My complaint with nhl.tv is the blackouts. I know this is a rights issue but I would be willing to pay a little higher price for the nhl package and get every friggen game. Quote
triumph_communes Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 chromecast still sucks, roku app has been great lot's of things can make chromecast not great -- you have the old version with a weaker processor, wifi interference, etc. Quote
