Tondas Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Taking a page from @Randall Flagg, I thought a discussion of the G.O.A.T’s in all major sports would be in order. Here are mine: MLB – Willie Mays. NFL – Walter Payton (Brady is a Patriot and therefore not in any consideration). NBA – LeBron James. NHL – Wayne Gretzky. Soccer – Pele. Golf – Jack Nicklaus (has a grandson who doesn’t wear gloves). Tennis – Serena Williams (Federer really close). Boxing – Mohammad Ali. NASCAR – Richard Petty. Dodgeball – Patches O’Houlihan Horses are not athletes so I did not go there. 1 Quote
ubkev Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 MLB - Barry Bonds NFL - Tom Brady (just give in. Your soul will be at peace) NBA - Jordan (yuck!) NHL - The Great One Soccer - Golf - can I say Jack? He hasn't won a major since I was a year old. Tiger Tennis - Federer. Agassi was my favorite, but Fed is the greatest. Boxing - Mayweather is the greatest technician ever in the ring, but Christ is he boring to watch. Roy Jones Jr on the other hand...pure thrill ride. NASCAR - Richie Evans Quote
Randall Flagg Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Is Gretzky the best GOAT of all sports? Not "greatest" but "best"? Quote
mudberry Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Jim Brown as best all around athlete for playing two sports at a hall of fame level? Maybe Bo Jackson for the same reason. Quote
Thwomp! Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 MLB – Babe Ruth NFL – Jerry Rice NBA – LeBron James NHL – Wayne Gretzky Soccer – Who cares? Golf – Tiger Tennis – Nadal Boxing – Mohammad Ali. NASCAR – Richard Petty. Horses - Secretariat Quote

sabills Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 MLB – Hank Aaron NFL – Barry Sandars NBA – James (I flipped between him and Jordan about 10 times before landing here. Weave Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Bobby Orr gets my NHL vote. Ali gets my boxing vote, buy I think arguments can be made otherwise. Petty in NASCAR seems obvious to me. Nicklaus in golf. So many ridiculous athletes in NFL for me to be able to single one out. Quote

GASabresIUFAN Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Alpine Skiing - Shiffrin. Love Lindsay, but Shiffrin is dominating at a younger age. In just 8 seasons she has 8 discipline titles, 3 overall and 60 wins. Lindsay is great 82 wins in 19 years, 4 overall titles and 16 discipline titles. Quote
#freejame Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 I’m surprised to see so many Henry Aaron votes. One of Ruth, Bonds, or Williams would be #1 for me. Teddy Williams is likely the greatest athlete+ of all-time. Quote

He was part of a Pats team that cheated. It is VERY likely that a couple of his Superbowls would not be there without cheating, his stats would likely be a lot less also. Take away some of those SBs and lower his stats a bit and he is not the greatest ever. Now, there are a lot of 'likely's in there...but in my book....the person (or team) that cheats loses the benefit of the doubt on those 'likely' and 'maybe' qualifiers. Quote

Not the Babe, Not Williams, Not Bonds. Griffey was also better then Bonds. Bonds was a roids player which will always diminish him in my eyes. Quote

But I totally disagree with "not top 10 of all time". For me it is definitely coloured by my interest in the NFL began in the final years of Danny Whites tenure at QB. Aikman was a dream to get. And the team they surrounded him was awesome. Here's that article. https://theathletic.com/1090762/2019/07/25/19-in-19-4-troy-aikman-is-many-things-but-overrated-is-definitely-not-one-of-them/ Edited August 12, 2019 by steveoath Quote
