he has to sign it first....he can refuse, correct? Couldn't we come in and offer more?

If they are announcing it then Aho has already signed the offer sheet. That means it's either Carolina or Montreal at this point.

That’s getting matched with ease

A 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd or $8M. That should be matched in a heartbeat. But I'm not the penny-pinching Hurricanes. MTL should have offered $9 for only one extra 1st round pick.

So, what happens if you offer Carolina a better deal than a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in return for the rights to Aho then match MTl's offer sheet?  Is that legal?  I'd have to assume it is, no?

I imagine no.

21 million paid out in first 12 months

That will make the Canes owner think twice.  Isn't he the same guy who just lost $70 million on the failed startup football league?

I'm not sure what would piss me off more, Montreal getting him for that price, or us not being smart enough to front load the contract and screw a cheap Canes ownership

We couldn’t do this offer, we don’t have the picks for this one.

It's too late for that. Now that Aho has signed with Montreal, Carolina has 7 days to match the deal exactly as written or take the compensation. If they keep him, he can't be traded for 1 year or a year and a day or something like that. It's been a while since I read up on it, but I'm pretty sure that's how it goes.

Buffalo not having their 3rd (from the Skinner deal) kept that offer from being possible.

Those bonuses are all due in 1 big chunk each year.  I get the impression that Canes ownership is cash poor.

Not cash poor, just plain cheap.  The rest of the guys on that team probably aren't even making the combined $21 million that Aho will get over the next year.  If anyone could pass on this contract, it's Dundon.

Yep.  No 3rd rounder.  And JBOT traded away another 3rd rounder for Vesey.  Looks like JBOT will never go the offer sheet route.
