LGR4GM Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 (edited) Trevor Zegras, C, USNTDP-USHL, https://theathletic.com/904724/2019/04/09/the-athletics-2019-nhl-mock-draft-lottery-edition-devils-get-the-no-1-pick/ May 20, 2001 | six-foot | 168 pounds Daniel Nugent-Bowman: The Oilers have some elite skill up front but not enough of it. Zegras, a six-foot, 168-pound forward, brings an element that’s badly lacking. Although he projects as a sublime, playmaking centerman with superb offensive vision, Zegras is more than comfortable on the wing. That’s important because talent and depth down the middle of the ice is one of the few areas the Oilers have covered on their NHL roster. Zegras is a Boston University commit, so don’t expect him in the pros right away. When he gets there, it’s not hard to envision him setting up 50-goal man Leon Draisaitl. Pronman’s take: In Zegras, the Oilers get arguably the best passer in the draft. Zegras is a truly elite playmaker who can run a power play with the best of them. While nobody is taking the puck from McDavid on the first power play unit, Zegras could run a very dangerous second unit and add to an already very talented young core. Zegras can play center or wing well, so the Oilers can decide how to deploy him along with McDavid, Draisaitl and Daniel Nugent-Hopkins. Edited April 10, 2019 by LGR4GM Quote

And I'll add that BU's strength and conditioning program has always been top notch. Even if he's there for just one year, he's going to be listed at a significantly higher number at this time next year. 1 Quote

Not ideal in NHL, no matter what the talent level. why are we still worrying about size? Top point producers this past year - Kucherov 178lbs at 25 Patrick Kane 177 at 30 Brad Marchand 181lbs at 30 Johnny Gaudreau 165lbs at 25 Brayden Point 166lbs at 23 Mitch Marner 175lbs at 21 Thats 6 of the top 11. 168lbs at 17 IS NOT AN ISSUE 1 1 Quote

I am 5' 11" and was 165 at 18 yrs, I was 185 lbs of solid muscle by 22. This kid is 6' tall. I professional trainer can look at his body type to see if he can carry 15 lbs more and keep his speed. No reason why he cannot be 185 by 20-21 years old. He can gain strength and speed to go with his skill. Quote

You know, my first thought when you said this was not what number he was wearing but trying to figure out how old the video was, then seeing it was from 2019 and trying to figure out how an 11 year old managed to make it into the game. Some days the obvious just passes you by... Quote

OhMyDahlin Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 (edited) THN Future Watch says Zegras is "ultra-skilled," and that "he'll transition to pro-hockey seamlessly." He has vision, creativity, explosiveness and he's offensively gifted...it also says he would be the star attraction for the USNTDP if not for Hughes. (That's from a scout they spoke with.) I'd love this pick, he's going to be a hell of a player...I don't believe he's any different, in terms of skill, than Hughes. (Hughes just has the IQ and awareness.) EDIT: And he's a New York boy! Trevor Zegras is an elite two-way forward that can play both wing and center. His pro-level mobility is the foundation of his game, supplementing an in-transition speed that shifts the pace of play. He knows how to get under the skin of opponents and will actively seek out opportunities to lay the body and create separation, all the while staying attentive to the unfolding play. This unique aspect of his game makes him difficult and frustrating to play against. His ability to finish and create plays is undoubtedly the hallmark of his game, as he is one of the major dynamos of his draft class. He is a dangerous scoring threat anywhere below the blue line and his vision matched with his net-drive propels him into positions that create high percentage opportunities. Defensively astute and proactive, he sees the lanes that his opponents do and will do his best to force the puck along the wall where he is at his best. All-in-all, Zegras is one of those special buzzsaw-type players that can excel in key roles and perform under pressure. (Curtis Joe, EP 2019)https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/424453/trevor-zegras The kid can score goals...having him as a winger with Mittelstadt wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Quote

I just like what I was able to gleam. The link from mynhldraft that you posted made several favorable comparisons to Hughes and I like the playmaker attribute that he's been thrown. I'll probably be happy with whoever they take unless it's a major reach, but this happened to be the kid I ended up liking the most after reading these threads. Quote

I think what you’ve got here is no franchise players, two legitimate top three prospects, and 6-8 more who would be picked somewhere around pick five most years. The thing is figuring out which one will be the Petterson/Marner and which is the Puljujarvi. Quote
North Buffalo Posted April 11, 2019 Report Posted April 11, 2019 (edited) So just got some info on him, kid grew up in Pound Ridge NY, went to Foxlane middle school til 7th grade than to Avon for hockey. This is where my kids go. Younger brother is 10th grade wrestler and quite a bit bigger. Zegras has mad skills according to Foxlane middle school front desk guy and fellow beer leaguer and has room to grow. Might be a nice ad for Sabres Edited April 11, 2019 by North Buffalo 1 Quote
