Doohicksie Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 If TM was just using Buffalo as leverage to up his offer from L.A., and JBot sniffed it out, he just sunk TM's plan.
Tondas Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 Since JBOT selected Vigneault to coach Team Canada for the IIHF World Championship, the intrigue increases. Although he did select Ruff as an assistant as well.
WildCard Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 Interesting that McKenzie is saying a offer/deal was never formalized. Makes me wonder if after meeting with him, we just decided no

Billznut Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 I would imagine Jbot said that he was going to talk to other candidates and would get back to McClellan. McClellan, with an offer on the table from LA already may not want to wait and instead will take the sure thing and sign with LA. Smart from both men’s point of view.
Tondas Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 Interesting position for JBOT to be in. On one hand, he feels he needs a coach with experience to make this thing work. On the other hand, he preaches development from the farm for both players and coaches leading to a Taylor hire. Going with Taylor enhances his philosophy of developing and hiring from within, while going outside the organization hints that development from within is great as long as his job is not on the line.
dudacek Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 (edited) It was Harrington, asking his kid questions at the press conference, wasn’t it? You guys are going to regret it when Vigneault declines and we’re stuck with Jacques Martin. And I’m not using Martin for effect. He’s an experienced head coach who knows the current league as an assistant, has a history of providing defensive structure, and he has ties with Botterill from Pittsburgh and Sexton from Pittsburgh and Ottawa. It wasn’t just this thread. It ended up on the front page of TBNs website, calling him the “leading candidate to become Sabres coach”.
GASabresIUFAN Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 Here are the numbers on Cup winning NHL coaches There are 13 coaches not named Scotty Bowman who have won Cups in the last 20 years. None have won Cups with more than one franchise. The great Hitch is the biggest exception to the rule. He jumped from the WHL to the NHL and won a Cup with his first team, but that in his 4th season with that team and it was also 20 years ago before the Cap Era. Of those coaches 11 had AHL HC experience before winning a Cup, 9 had previous NHL HC experience before winning a Cup. Only Disco Dan won a Cup in the first year on his 1st NHL job. Only Larry Robinson had no HC experience in lower levels, but his Cup in NJ was 18 years ago and in his 3rd year as an NHL HC and on his second NHL HC job. These 13 coaches averaged 7 years of NHL HC experience with at least 4 years of experience behind the bench and on at least his 2nd NHL HC job. Many of the recent guys also spent years as an NHL ast coach, such as Quennville, Sullivan and Sutter. So we are looking for guys with NHL ast experience, AHL HC experience, at least 4 years of NHL HC experience and the Sabres will be at least their 2nd NHL HC job. 3

It's possible he didn't want to Babcock us, but it's more likely the Sabres had several candidates and they want to see someone else. Who's up next, AV? Edited April 12, 2019 by IKnowPhysics 1
GASabresIUFAN Posted April 12, 2019 Report Posted April 12, 2019 By the way Alain Vigneault fits the pedigree. He has NHL ast experience, some AHL HC expereince, and the Sabres would be his 4th NHL HC team with 15 years behind the bench. 1

You have to think if they go with experience, AV has a very real shot considering the closeness he and Jbot will share with team Canada. If they choose to go with someone new, I’d expect Taylor to be the guy. 1
