Howard sees that Sheary is shooting and does what most goaltenders do these days; he drops down to cover the lower part of the net. It ends up squeaking in right next to his blocker just before he reacts and moves it out. Notice that he's still dropping down in the third shot, then moves his blocker in the fourth (one frame later on the video.) While I might like him to pick it up in time (if I were a Detroit fan), it's not so far out that I would call it a true softie. Looking at these, and watching the replay that’s a shot that you expect your goalie to make at the NHL level. It takes nothing away from Sheary’s play to say Howard played that poorly. 1 Quote

A split second look to that side could've been the difference. Remember that less than two seconds earlier Sheary was almost at the boards on Howard's left side: He then cut across before making the shot. So, Howard was moving left-to-right with the play. Edit: for reference, here's his position about 1 second before the shot was released: Edited February 10, 2019 by carpandean Quote

Weave Posted February 10, 2019 Report Posted February 10, 2019 (edited) Any time goalies are interviewed and asked about the hardest scorers to play against they all say that release deception is the thing that separates the best scorers. That Sheary shot is a fantastic example of release deception. That’s not a soft goal. That is the kind of shot goalies fear the most. corrcted to say Sheary Edited February 10, 2019 by Weave 1 Quote

All due credit on effort! we slightly disagree... but I’m happy to cede to the effort. Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted February 10, 2019 Report Posted February 10, 2019 Well, I certainly think this horse is dead too. For the record, while Howard probably could have played the shot better ... that is an NHL level shot. I don't think that many NHL goalies could / would stop that shot. If they did it would be in large account to pure luck. Quote
