Eleven Posted November 24, 2018 Report Posted November 24, 2018 I can't have coffee anymore. So when I have it, it's decaf, and it's black. 1 Quote

U throw it in the fridge with the grounds in a tea bag for 24 hours. It's refreshing. It's slightly more bitter than hot coffee but really good. Cold Brew is less acidic than hot brewed coffee. It's much easier on the body. I love cold brewing and can't believe I neglected to mention it. Next year I plan on dedicating a small 3 gallon keg to it in my tap system. (I can't fit a 5 gallon keg in there that would hold beer). So 3 beer taps and 1 coffee tap. ? 2 Quote
Samson's Flow Posted November 24, 2018 Report Posted November 24, 2018 Drink coffee occasionally. Sometimes I'm in the mood for multiple cups and other times I go days without it. Always black and prefer darker roasts. Also since my trip to Europe I keep searching for the Turkish coffee but nothing has been the same. Quote

How long can you keep it in the fridge before it goes bad? Quote

LTS Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 Just now, pi2000 said: Can you cold brew it and then drink it hot? Or does that change the taste and/or acidity? How long can you keep it in the fridge before it goes bad? I've never tried heating cold brewed coffee but your question piqued my interest so I did a quick search. There appears to be supporting evidence that you can heat up cold brew. You probably won't want to microwave it but perhaps putting it over a heat source. I would imagine that will change the taste simply because of the impact heat has on flavor compounds. I don't think it will get more acidic as the acid was never extracted from the bean. I could be wrong. I recall having read an article at one point in time about there being a break point where certain compounds in coffee would be altered as it passed that temperature point. This was in reference to chilling hot coffee. I can't find any reference to it now. The gist was, don't do it. It would impart off flavors. As for storage, the biggest danger is oxidation. If you have a full container that is sealed will it will likely last a few days to a week. Some people talk about leaving it longer but you never know what their taste buds tell them is "still okay". I never make a massive amount of cold brew so its gone within days. When I do the keg it will have a layer of Co2 on it so that should help preserve it. 1 Quote
pi2000 Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 I'm curious if I could manufacture a cold brew using a french press. I'll give it a try and report back. Quote
North Buffalo Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 Let me know... I have my french press and might be willing to try... you talking tonight? Quote

Wyldnwoody44 Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 The cool thing about the traveling is experiencing all kinds of coffee, luwak coffee in Bali and in Europe, so many cafes. At home I tend to get stuck with Timmy's although it really is a crappy cup of coffee served by teens that can't even count to double double. I'll take Starbucks if it's around, a blonde roast with some vanilla in it. I have 6 Kg of green coffee from various countries that I will be roasting small amounts at a time at home, then grind it and press or use my breville to steep the grounds. I also try and collect whole coffee from any country I see and have that at home to change up the flavor. Did you know also, that the darker the roast the less caffeine content, as it gets cooked out during roasting. Quote

shrader Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 I can't believe it took until the second page for the Airplane! clip. Anyway, I'm not really a coffee guy but I'll have some here at the office since it's free caffeine. They have two different pots (and a 3rd that is caffeine free) and I'll take whichever one is full. I don't bother to add anything to it. Beyond that, I will never pay for a cup. This has to be the perfect thread for an interaction from my house this weekend. My aunt was in town from Buffalo and so was my brother from Florida. Friday morning she asks him "do they have Starbucks in Florida?". I just about fell off my chair. Quote
TheAud Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 Preferred coffee (and tea) in my house comes from Taiwan. The coffee is from various South American locations but roasted in one particular coffee shop in Tainan. I don't know what it is but they just nail it. We buy 6 or 8 bags of beans and keep them frozen until needed. Just ran out today in fact and lo and behold the wife is heading over to Taiwan this Thursday and will replenish the supply! We drink it hot and black. Am getting interested in cold brewing however after reading this thread... Taiwanese tea is at a standard I can't find in the US. Outstanding. Quote

I've done it in the press a few times (for MrsPie). Roughly 2/3 c of grounds per pint of water, leave it on the counter overnight at least. MrsPie has been all in on the cold brew for a year of so now, we have a Keurig in the basement for guests and a french press, but those rarely get used. We picked up a couple metal strainers on Amazon that fit into wide-mouth Mason jars. Put coffee in, leave on the counter for 1-2 days, then remove the strainer and refrigerate. We started with quart jars, but lately have been using the 1/2 gallon to be more efficient. We also have some mesh bags, but I don't like those as much. https://www.amazon.com/Zell-Coffee-Infuser-Durable-Stainless/dp/B01HIT0VMW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1543243684&sr=8-6&keywords=metal+coffee+filter+wide+mouth 4 hours ago, RambosKnife said: All this coffee straight black talk and I regret telling everyone I drink tea. Good Black teas. I lean towards Asian green tea, lately a lot of Japanese styles. Put I'm not picky, I'll drink almost any tea with caffeine (white, green, black , oolong, etc.), and the occasional herbal. This morning is Genmaicha, although I'll probably make Lapsang Souchong (smoked balck tea, it smells like a campfire while you're brewing it) for the next pot. 1 Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 Hello, this is angry (?) NS speaking. My wife had her annual appointment with her Pain Management Specialist early this AM. So early that I had to forgo my usual Turkish (made in the Bosnian tradition) this morning. I have an emergency (and I mean emergency) stash in my office of ... of ... bloody hell ... I can hardly bring myself to say it ... instant I am one angry puppy right now and it's only going to get worse. /rant ... Quote
Sabres Fan in NS Posted November 27, 2018 Report Posted November 27, 2018 This is my favourite time of day ... it is just about 7:00 AM here in Halifax. I just prayed the dawn prayers and some extra. The crows are flying by on their return to their daylight stomping grounds from their nighttime roosting grounds. They are fasinating birds. Several thousand go to a University grounds near us to roost at night. during the winter months They then return each day to their daytime homes. I am about to enjoy my Lavaza Espresso coffee made in the Bosnian tradition. I can use any coffee to make it, but Turkish and / or Bosnian have the perfect grind and flavour. I do like this Espresso a lot, though. 1 Quote
