Doohicksie Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 One thing I've come to realize in my years here is that there are different "levels of precision" in the conversations here. There are the analytics nerds who can discuss issues with great precision and have the numbers to back it up. There are scouting wonks that know all the players in the all the leagues and how they compare with each other. But at the other end of the spectrum are.... people like me. Unlike the nerds and wonks, I'm just a fan. I don't scour through stats and don't sift through websites to get my information. In fact, most of the information I get about hockey comes from this website, as digested by the nerds and wonks. And when I throw ideas out there, don't think of my statements as well-analyzed money-ball conclusions.... think of them as something a guy sitting next to you at a bar might come up with.... you know, a guy who's already had a few ginger ales. So let me say thanks to the nerds, wonks, and other knowledgeable hockey folks that post here. I appreciate the insight you bring to the board. But please consider that some of us just say stuff and no, we don't have the data to back it up. We're just simple fans trying to understand the game. 5 3 Quote
SwampD Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 The funny thing is we all hit at about the same percentage. Quote
Sabres Fan in NS Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Way to go Doohickie. I'm the guy sitting next to you in that bar. I am allowed in and it would not be tempting. Club Sodas all around!! 1 Quote

French Collection Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I don't mind reading some of the analytics stuff on this board so it helps to "keep me in the loop ". I am an old school eye test guy because I am older and I'm not interested in spending my hockey time reading charts and spreadsheets. I guess you could say I also believe in intangibles. My cocktail of choice is a Caesar. Beer works fine for most occasions. Quote

Doohicksie Posted July 17, 2018 Author Report Posted July 17, 2018 I guess I started this because I started to get in over my head in the 3 First Rounders in 2019 thread. I do enjoy all the analytics, fancystats and scouting reports.... I guess until they get used against me. ? 1 Quote
hockeyhound Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 I was that guy who would go to the Jackson Bowling Alley in East Aurora, and sit in the bar enjoying an unlimited supply of wings and beer while watching the Sabres. One particular game was very memorable, I believe that night we were standing on top of the bar stools during the Sabres vs Bruins match-up; no sooner did the puck drop, the gloves would drop and it was on. If I remember correctly, there wasn't any precision analysis going on; however, I did have a slight headache in the morning and the wings were just as hot on the way out as they were on the way in, how is that for precision. I love this board, and the people and place I call home. Thanks for keeping this site going; keep up the great work. Let's Go Buffalo! 3 1 Quote

I watch the games but never seem to find the motivation nor the time to do the research. Life gets in the way. But I do appreciate everything the nerds and wonks bring to the board. I've played hockey all my life but I learn something new every time I log in. And this place is a hoot so thanks to Scott also. 3 Quote

Sabre1974 Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 I love coming on here too and reading all the posts. Hope to be able to do one of the sabre space meet ups at some point. Feel very fortunate to follow this sport with all the friends I have made and all the countries I have visited through watching it. 1 Quote
LTS Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 Stats are cool... I'm way more interested in the mental aspects of the game. 78.62% of the game is mental, the rest is emotion.... or something. And this avatar is bugging me... I need to find inspiration for the next one. Quote

Either way, it is a superior cocktail. Quote

The Caesar has worstechire sauce, Tabasco sauce a celery salt rim plus some veggies like pickled beans, olives and/or celery. Waiting for my coworker to bring some any minute. Quote
