SwampD
Heck, we have posters who burst a vessel whenever Rip hands out another "bad" number. Why would we not think that players would be more comfortable with a certain number? is it any more odd than only eating chicken on gameday or the thousands of other things players do. Like weave said, players are odd, therefore this isn't.
IvanPutski
Speaking of numbers...…. does anyone know why Mittlestadt wears #37? Was it a Rip Special or did he chose it?
North Buffalo
Gotta be a RIP special, but I think he chose because he admires Bergeron of the Bruins... Edited July 8, 2018 by North Buffalo

So my buddies and I were asking what number I should wear and I settled on 37.” Sounds like no special reason. I wish he would go to 22 since Larry is likely gone. I think you're overanalyzing. It's not that players like certain numbers. I get that. Source: sports fan since 1975. I find the number switch to be the odd part of it. Is there precedent for a player of Eichel's caliber to switch after three seasons? The personal meaning in the number, apart from sports, apparently, also makes me wonder. Johnny Gaudreau, Getzlaf, Perry all did it too, though that was only for a season as young guys, presumably in a Rip-like tradition. There's another recent good player that did it but I can't put my finger on who it was.

dudacek
I really wish they didn’t retire numbers so easily. 11 and 39 should be the only retired numbers for this franchise. Goalies should wear 1, defencemen 2-6, forwards 7-18, anyone can have 19-29, numbers above 30 are for backup goalies and minor league call ups. Get off my lawn. Well, I was with you in the first paragraph. And then you had to go and get all....old....on me ? Edit: My radical opinion is the players wear the number they want to wear. Regardless, players change numbers. For whatever reason they do it, I don't get the compulsion to psychoanalyze it. These guys don't shave during the playoffs, won't wash their gear out of superstition, have an identical game day routine right down to music, etc. The number is just another on the list of things that are weird, but overall not worth thinking much about. I also can't believe we are 13 pages deep on a number change, and even more surprised that I am posting on page 13. We really need some good hockey soon.
