Great work by Botterill

He continues to impress.  If last night was the trend, I think he actually knows how to build a team.

The only problem I can see is if we re-sign Skinner to a big deal.

True, but good thing GMJB is a cap whizz. in the next fewyears Blow-U, Moulson, Girgensons, Larsson, P-ville will be off the books

Could it be that Botts was able to sell Sam's camp a more friendly deal cap wise for now with the promise if Sam continues his development he'll get the much bigger payday when our cap room is more favorable?

some good money coming off the books after this year, Moulson for example.  I think you're right

Interesting.

I can't imagine a scenario in 2018 where a player would even consider such a thing. Reinhart knows if he puts up points he's gonna get paid. Playing with Dahlin, Jack, Mitts, Skinner and Sheary should allow him to put up boku points.

And my glorious victory is sealed!

This is both fair and a very good deal for the Sabres.  It's a modest cap hit, they didn't reward Reino for a lousy season in his contract year, and they didn't get married to someone who might not be worth it.  From Reino's perspective, he knows that if he has 2 strong years -- which he now is highly incentivized for -- he will get a huge contract next time.

Good call here.

Although as an occasional grammar cop, your spelling of "boku" is questionable.

That all bodes well for his next contract wouldn't you think?

This is a really good point

@Matt_Bove
If the #Sabres sign Reinhart to a two-year deal there is a chance they’ll need to give new deals to Reinhart, Mittelstadt & Dahlin in the same summer. Not saying that’s a bad thing but that’s going to be a lot of money.

Damn that is a deal I would never have expected, guess the big leverage for Botts was that most of his points came on the powerplay.

The price is lower than I thought but the term doesn't surprise me. I thought Sam would do 1 yr but 2 years at that price is awesome.

Yeah I would have expected him getting 5 mill for sure.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised by the price as well.  But I also think JBot pushed the salary cap dead space issue, and that if Sam wants that top contract he needs to wait until there's more space cleared.... and he proves he's worth it.

Bove is wrong. Even if they give new deals to all 3, Dahlin's deal will not matter until the following year.

Well it won't matter but I think it's interesting they're all up at the same time. It lets Bots have full control of a situation

They are not all up at the same time. Mittelstadt and Reinhart are up in 2 years. Dahlin is up in 3. Sure they can all sign in the same summer but it doesn't matter because Dahlin's next contract doesn't impact the cap for 3 years.

I know it doesn't matter for the cap at the time. But they are, in all likelihood, going to resign them all 2 years from now. That will allow Bots to control all of them in the same situation; negotiations, leverage, how much he can pay who, etc

Will Sam have arbitration rights at that time?

I think it’s a good point.  Liger is right that Dahlin’s contract won’t take effect until the following year, but it will still be a big factor in their planning — especially if all 3 of them prove worthy of fat long-term deals.

Couldn’t agree on long term value, so they decided on a bridge that looks like the biggest out there among recent peers like Mantha And Domi.

Good to see Sam in camp so soon, hope he goes out and earns $7 million on his next deal.

Dont see any down side to this.
