It might be the flu, they say, but Mair didn't feel right after the last game. Can we all take our Sabre hats off and agree that, if he was not ready to come back, there is something very wrong here? I was suspicious when testing in Buffalo did not suit the Sabres, so they sent him to Pittsburgh and got a clean bill of health. I wondered why the results in Pittsburgh would be accepted -- just because they were the results the Sabres wanted? IMHO the Sabres have rushed several players back from injury this year, with those players almost immediately being sidelined again with the same injury. Are hockey players human beings or pieces of meat? I just hate to see this, especially when you're talking about someone's well being when his hockey career is over.

First of all, TSN had Mair out for concussion in their EOG stats, not that it means anything.

But PA, I DO NOT believe the team is bringing these guys back too early.

For the most part, they come back when they are ready to come back. It's the players ultimate decision to go on the ice. I'm sure they feel some pressure... team, coaches, fans, etc... but no one "forces" them to get back out there. Briere was held off ice til after the Olympics. Connelly was kept out the entire year. LaFontaine wasn't allowed back, and yes, I know money was probably a factor. "Symptom free" (Mair) doesn't mean you can't have a relapse at some point, whether its a week or a month.

I had an injury and was cleared to take part in something, and ended up in the ER about two hours later needing surgery. I didn't blame the doc. I pretty much begged him to let me go. I imagine these players are the same way. They WANT to play, not sit in the stands, regardless of the situation.

Joe Mesi is another great example. 99% of the boxing world wouldn't let him back in the ring, so he keeps looking until FINALLY someone caves. Maybe he's ok, and maybe he isn't. But he made the choice, not his dad or a doctor somewhere.

Knowing what I do of sports injuries, and having suffered through a few, I don't believe the Sabres treat them as a meat wagon.

I think I heard it was the other brain... ;) ( A little Jochen humor for ya... )

Seriously, I was pretty surprised that Mair was back. I'm guessing Adam pushed it more than the Sabres though.

PAFan -- Hold on just a second. That is a pretty serious allegation. Yes, Connolly and Hecht came back and were re-injured, but Hecht's injury was to his other leg after a cheap shot by Tucker, and Connolly's injury, although to the same leg, resulted from a pretty weird knee-on-knee collision that was replayed a bunch of times -- ie not from general weakness or strain on the knee.

Meanwhile, neither Briere nor Dumont has had any kind of relapse and as was pointed out below Briere was held out until after the olympics even though he was raring to go.

Maybe I'm kidding myself, but I think this organization operates with a pretty solid amount of integrity. They didn't need to trade Mika, but they did, and part of the reason was they felt they owed it to him. I just can't see Lindy or Darcy rushing Mair back -- or permitting anyone to rush him back -- from a very serious and risky injury unless they were very comfortable with the medical assessment.

Go Sabres.

I agree 100%. I have thought that even before the latest thing with Mair. It seems like we have rushed almost every player back from injury. Remember when Briere came back during that home and home series against Pittsburgh earlier in the year? After the second game, we come to find out that he has an abdominal tear and will be sidelined for months. I don't understand why we would feel the need to rush people back, we have lots of depth at forward like Novotny, Paille, Thorburn, MacArthur, etc.

nfreeman, you hold on. Hecht hurt the SAME knee that was injured earlier in the season, and in his first game back from THAT re-injury, he hurt the other knee in the collision with Tucker. We don't know what role if any the previous injuries played in Hecht's inability to get out of Tucker's way. I think you are kidding yourself if you think there's not pressure to get players back and get them back quickly. As for Mair's medical assessment, apparently it was crap.

PA Fan -- while your point is well taken regarding hecht's re-injury, I think that is the only factual example of any possible rushing a player back. I also don't remember whether there was a collision on which he was re-injured, or whether it was just lingering pain/strain/etc. In any event, regarding his current injury, you yourself state that "we don't know what role if any the previous injuries played in Hecht's inability to get out of Tucker's way." Since we DON'T know, and since it was the other knee in this instance, I don't think we should just speculatively assume that the sabres are at fault.

I also think we just can't come to any conclusions yet about Mair, since we don't know whether it's concussion-related. Regarding past concussions, they held Max out for the last 45 games or so in 02-03, connolly out for an entire season in 03-04, and Mair out for 31 games this year. And, when Mair didn't feel well yesterday, they held him out again. That doesn't sound like a reckless approach to concussions.

I think what this comes down to is whether we trust Lindy -- since he is the one who sees how they look in practice and he has the ability to hold someone out -- to look out for his guys. If someone gives me some concrete, specific reason not to trust him this way, OK, I'm open to hearing about it and having an honest discussion. But until that happens, in light of the facts we know to date, I trust him.

the briere and dumont surgeries certainly do not fall in the category of "rushing" anyone back. in fact briere's biggest problem was that he was misdiagnosed!

Mair did take a pretty big hit in the Philly game, from Gauthier maybe. I think I remember him bouncing right back up though. I hope he comes back soon.

Exactly. It wasn't that the team tried to get him to play injured. I'm not a doctor, but if I understood correctly Briere's abdominal tear was very small, so it took an extra diagnosis.

I think it's hard to blame the organization unless you have specific evidence that they rushed players back. We're dealing with a bunch of competitive guys here. Most athletes are going to try to get themselves back in the lineup as quickly as possible.

I give the team the benefit of the doubt, especially considering that they kept Briere out of the lineup until after the Olympic break.
