NFL 2018-19

Didn't expect the other thread to get shut down. Not sure why that was the expectation.

This one likely will be too, as soon as a certain someone injects politics into football again, because there's nowhere else to talk about it. But until then, well...

I still want Allen sitting on the bench all year.

EDIT because I can't believe autocorrect changes "nowhere" to "no where."

Yep. Keep McCarron away from all rubber mats.

“If you keep putting candy on display and making people pay for it, shoplifting is going to happen,” said the serial shoplifter.

Maybe just accept that football is now politics? It's not *our* fault that the President and the owners are trying to use the NFL as a nationalist cudgel.

And to those who got it shut down: Govern yourselves.

It's never going to work. Then they'll just keep banning long-time posters who will eventually leave because of it, all in an effort to not get people to leave in the first place. It's the same as regulating anything in life. Where there's a will there's a way. You're never going to stop it, might as well just work with it

Meanwhile anyone who does visit this place pops in a hockey forum and sees politics everywhere. Probably not staying for long

The strongest reason to isolate it in its own thread.  It's not like it's a topic that reasonably can be avoided in this era.  We aren't the ones inserting politics into everything.

Right. It's absolutely unavoidable right now in daily life. It impacts all of our hobbies, our jobs, our families.

It's been 18 months. The "cooling off period" should be over with. I think we've behaved ourselves well enough in that interval to earn a shot at having a sub-forum of some kind.

I would like to be able to talk about these things with my friends on here. I don't think that's too much to ask.

People can disagree about subjects in a non-disagreeable manner. That isn't censorship, it's tact.

"Those who got it shut down, govern yourself". That was the post I was referring too. It was shut down solely because it veered towards a political issue. There was not tactless ppl attacking posters. That isn't governing, that's censoring.

freeman, maybe it's time that SDS, chz, and you had a teleconference about this.

It is a fact--not opinion--that we have a US president who injects politics into all corners of daily life.

It is my opinion that this results in politics infecting various threads on the board.

It is my further opinion that that, in turn, results in some people getting aggravated, because they don't want to deal with politics.

It is my further opinion that a politics thread would contain such stuff, and that the other threads on the board will be cleaner as a result.

On top of that, I'm simply sick of having my voice squelched here, and I know I'm not alone.  I want to be able to discuss whatever I want with the people on this board.  There's a Rod and Gun Club (not my thing but ok).  There's a cooking thread.  There's a reading thread.  I think there's a beer thread (also not my thing, but ok).  90% of the discussion on this board is about hockey, but 10% isn't, and a lot of those threads are entertaining for a lot of people.

I tried to start this subtly, but I'll be plain now.  I'm not interested in having an account on SS any longer if all political talk is squelched.  I'm simply not.  This isn't a challenge to anyone's authority; this isn't me trying to push back on a mod (who is a volunteer and that should be respected).  But the president injects politics into EVERYTHING and it is folly to think that we're not going to want to discuss it on here.  My suggestion remains that the politics thread be reopened.  If not, then please stop locking every thread that has some political posts in it, because it's going to happen everywhere.

Please get together with SDS and chz and make your collective decision so I can make mine.  Thank you.

One way to accomplish this would be to do what another forum I'm on does: a paid membership section.

Charge $15/yr so that the more dedicated members of this forum have somewhere more lightly moderated to discuss more personal topics with one another. Call us "Supporting Members" or something and use our desire to talk more freely as a way to fund the site.

You mean censor not govern.

Sure. That works too.

Listen: I have no issue with the desire for political talk on this board. But I also know the rules. And I want my Bills thread re-opened.

I would like to be able to talk about these things with my friends on here. I don't think that's too much to ask.

This is fine by me.

I stepped foot in the politics thread once, maybe twice, in my entire time on the board. I avoided it like the goddamned plague.

My sense: Those who want to talk politics on this board find value in that thread being open to all comers, even if it's dominated by a handful of devoted posters.
