Taro T Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 No love for Ristolainen ? Satan  OK, make him the spare (on the 4 D pairing (we are talking Euros, right ;))) & Victor can be the 1st callup. ;) D Zhitnik Numinnen Johannson Krupp Lydman Tallinder Virta Svoboda Spare: Antipin washing Hasek's car: Smehlik ... clears the puck, not out. D Zhitnik Numinnen Johannson Krupp Lydman Tallinder Virta Svoboda Spare: Antipin washing Hasek's car: Smehlik ... clears the puck, not out. Svoboda and Virta would be a strong 2nd pairing in today's NHL. Yeah. Had to have them in the mix but would have a hard time bumping any of the other 6 (except Lydman) out. And Toni just balanced Hank so well down the stretch of '06 before Hank broke his arm that it was hard to break up that pairing. Which is more support to the proposition that the Sabres have had a LOT of 2nd pairing guys through the years (along w/ a very few #2's on the top pairi g) but NEVER that true #1 franchise guy. (Canadian Schoenfeld probably being the closest to a #1.) Quote
ubkev Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 I like Henrik Tallinder and liked Andrej Sekera Quote
Huckleberry Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Grigorenko  Still say he is better than girgensons :p Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted May 9, 2018 Author Report Posted May 9, 2018 I like Henrik Tallinder and liked Andrej Sekera Good choices. Hecht for 2nd line center with Satan on the RW and Hecht at Center. I have Afinogenov and Kotalik as the 3rd and 4th RWs but I lacking centers and LW. What about Kalinin on D? Quote
Sabre1974 Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Thomas Vanek my favourite, watched him play for Austria when attending the 2008 world championships Quote
Sabres Fan in NS Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 How about Yuri (missed the net again) K. on LW? Quote

Just keep pushing Smehlik further into the Niagara. ;) Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted May 9, 2018 Author Report Posted May 9, 2018 Varada for LW Spacek another good D Quote

dudacek Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) Krupp Numminen and especially Johansen played nowhere near their best hockey inBuffalo. And Risto is clearly suffering from reverse recency bias. Zhitnik Smehlik and Lydman Tallinder were among the best pairs in Sabre history, although they were better as pairs than individually: on,y Alex was a first pairing guy (the Sabres have never had a true number one D) Risto and Teppo would be my other two, although Svoboda deserves strong consideration. IMO Zhitnick was definitely a #1 d man. He had all star consideration and skated Risto level minutes. If he had a good #2 partner instead of Shmelik he would have been remembered much more fondly. Good call on Svoboda. He was a good one. I’m kind of surprised by the love of Lydman and Tallinder over Zhitnick and Svoboda. Must be alot of the commenters didn’t see them play. Quote
Winston Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 I don’t have anyone to add, but did find this interesting while researching: Danny O’Regan was actually born in Germany. His dad was playing professionally over there (after finishing his own NCAA career at BU). Quote
BuffaloFan32 Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Why all the love for Kalinin? I seem to remember him never living up to potential and consistently turning over the puck in key situations. He received a few ‘motivational speeches’ from Ruff. Quote
DarthEbriate Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 What, no Schutz or Zagrapan? Mogilny, Vanek, Satan. We can score some pretty goals. We've also a solid defensive corp. The goalie isn't bad, either. Don Cherry would tremble at our dominance over his precious namby-pamby Corellians. And Varada! Quote
