If ANYONE was looking to make a buck last year they were SORELY disappointed.

 

And pretty sure that when you consider that most all the TO ST's are owned by corporations, you even lose on the "looking to make a buck %age" comparison. Corporations that aren't NFP's are by definition "looking to make a buck." ;)

By what metric is Buffalo NOT a great hockey market?

Growth potential. It's hard to grow a sport in a city that is completely inundated with the sport. The NHL doesn't need Dahlin in Buffalo. We're going to watch Paul Szchahura (sp?) and Zenon Kanopka lace em up. Why bother sending actual talent?

Baltimore & Milwaukee were great hockey markets back in the day. Now they are pretty much entirely after thoughts.

 

Heck, when's the last time Ra-cha-cha sold out an Amerks game. Prior to Donner's FLA experiment the place was almost always packed on the weekends.

I don't get this talk of stripping down to the studs and rebuilding. It's not like they have anything significant to strip away. They need to rebuild the bottom 6, but they have some pieces already... Mittlestadt, Bailey, Smith.... Baptiste maybe, a couple UFAs and you're done.

Because the Canadian market that will sell out their arena through the apocalypse, that nobody will ever stay up to watch, desperately needed the savior of hockey over Bettman's lovechild in Arizona that is under constant threat to leave but could be stabilized by a superstar, and is slowly growing its hockey base, giving us the 1st overall pick in 2016 and surprisingly high television ratings for playoff games. Duh.

Yes, they were sorely disappointed. Are you denying that this is a thing in Buffalo?

 

The atmosphere in the arena, even when the team was good, is another strike against Buffalo. People do show up for the games, by and large, I'll give you that.

And I'm done. "Great hockey town" is right up there with "We want to thank the greatest fans in the world" nonsense said by every team in every sport.

The structure of the team runs through Eichel, O'Reilly, Mittelstadt, Rodrigues / Asplund etc right now.  Also,  Reinhart is not going elsewhere. The defense does need to be stripped.  Starting with Nelson, Antipin, Guhle, and if we ultimately choose to ship or keep Ristolainen.  The rest of the team needs to be stripped IMO.

The highest revenue grossing league in the world doesn't use a lottery.    Never has, and it's worked out quite well for them.    

 

The NHL is such a garage league they needed to fix something that didn't need fixing and now here we are, with a generational talent wasting away on team that gets no airtime in the US.    And now this dumb lottery presentation scheme.    It pisses me off the more I think about it. 

 

If a team wants to tank and risk alienating their fanbase to be able to draft an 18 year old kid, then let them do it... there's nothing wrong it.      If anything, the lottery encourages more teams to tank, because as you drop in the standings you're chances at #1 overall improve... so everybody is trying to out-tank eachother.

That said the bottom 8 should be in a lottery. The Last place should get a 65% chance of first. 8th gets 2%

I do agree that the NHL has a goofy system. If Floriday wins the lottery after having 96 points this year...... what possible fairness is that to the bottom dwellers whoever they might be. STUPID.

Bottom 4 teams and anyone within 10 points of the bottom dweller gets in a lottery. Keeps someone from tanking who shouldn't and the bottom dwellers still get the top picks.

It's like last year, Phlly and Dallas had no business getting picks over Colorado, Arizona or Vancouver. 

 

While I'm at it, there's no reason why we can't jump up in the playoff  picture next year. Not only did Colorado do it but New Jersey did also with big time jumps in regular season points.
